We are looking for information on the vesel Vega that was built some time before 1893 by Ole and Johann Nerhus for a mister Nils Vagen. She was built as a stone carrier and for general cargos but is reputed to have made several trips on the immigrant run and also been active during the second world war. she was registered 55 tonnes and is still sailing. |

Hi Ellen Thank you for the kind assistance. Vega was for much of her life a Galeas although she seems to have been changed several times between a big cutter and a Galeas. When we got her she was a cutter rig but still had her aft mast step in place. We are now replacing that mast to restore her to her original Galeas rig. Do you have any further information on the Galeas you found? It seems that our Vega was sold to Sweden in about 1905 when her papers were fiddled to make her look like a Swedish boat. This makes tracking her history even more difficult. |

A quick search on the Internet tells us that they are/were many, many vessels named Vega from many different countries. The Vega built in 1893 by the Nerhus brothers was running humanitarian supplies in Ghana last year.

My advice on contacting the Maritime Museum still stands, you will have to use snail mail. |

Thanks Jo Anne,
Actually that was us, and we were carrying much needed food and medical supplies to the tsunami victims in Ache provence. I might also mention we had over 20 tons of supplies and not the 6 mentioned in the article. We were the only boat that could make it through the rip tides and currents to land our cargo on the very dangerous West coast where the hardest hit communities were. Several larger modern boats had tried before us and all suffered severe damage that forced them to return still with their cargos. I think that says a lot about how well Old Vega was built and why it would be useful to have as much of her history as possible documented. |

There is a photograph of the 'Vega' on page 85 of "Kvinnherad 2: Gards- og ættesoga" (Nerhus - Gnr. 6) Caption: "Jekta heiter «Vega» og er bygd ved skipsbyggeriet til Ole H. Nerhus. Reiar var Nils Vågen m. fl. Byggeåret var 1893. Jekta vart seinare seid til Helgeland." On page 86 is a photograph which includes Johan Nerhus. Caption: "Andreas Ljostveit (Losen) og båtbyggjar Johan Nerhus."

The ship you are seeking was originally called "Vegard". It was built in 1873 at Tangen in Tvedestrand, Norway, by A. Andersen and Martin Eldrup. Her weight was originally 370 brutto tons, 355 netto tons. She was rebuilt several times. Meassures: 120-27-15,2.
Captains: Albreth Albrethsen 1873 - 8 ? Boye 1882 - 85 E. Andersen 1885 - 97 Owners: Lars Espeland 1873 Chr. Christiansen 1885 - 87 A&F Smith 1888-97
In1897 she was sold to Sweden and changed her name to WEGA.
I hope this can help you. Regards Ellen |

Thank you all for the help so far . We did by pure luck manage to get the pages mentioned copied and sent to us and that does indeed seem to be the same boat we have. Whay we did not get in either case was a translation of the text: : "Jekta heiter «Vega» og er bygd ved skipsbyggeriet til Ole H. Nerhus. Reiar var Nils Vågen m. fl. Byggeåret var 1893. Jekta vart seinare seid til Helgeland." On page 86 is a photograph which includes Johan Nerhus. Caption: "Andreas Ljostveit (Losen) og båtbyggjar Johan Nerhus." Could someone kindly help us with this text and any further information on this vessel?
Thank you again
