Nels Ellestad, then age 12 was shown by 1857 census living with elder brother Andrew (then using name Branson) in Newburg Twp., Fillmore Co., Minnesota. He was born abt 1845 at Vestre Slidre, Valdres; don't know when or how he got to America. Two other older immigrant brothers, Iver and Gulbran (Gilbert), used Gulbranson patronymic for a time, but by 1885 all three older brothers had settled on using Ellestad name; two had used Ellestad name when sailing on the brig Concordia in 1849. Don't know how or when Nels came to America; rumored to have gone to Iowa as a young man. |

Hi, I found these people among emigrants from Valdres:
Ander Gulbrandsen, Ellestad, born 1824-Jun-4, to America on 1849-Feb-24 link Iver Gulbrandsen, Ellestad, born 1826-Sep-4, to America on 1849-Feb-24 link Gudbrand Gudbrandsen, Ellestad, born 1829-Mar-12, emigrating 1850-Mar-26 link
I believe they are the sons of Guldbrand Johnsen & Guri Jorgensdr, and are born in Vang, Oppland.
Gulbrand & Guri are registered with these children on LDS: Randi Gulbrandsdr, christened 17 NOV 1816 Vang, Oppland, Norway link Jorgen Guldbrandsen, christened 20 MAY 1819 Vang, Oppland, Norway link John Guldbrandsen, christened 02 FEB 1822 Vang, Oppland, Norway link Andres Gulbrandsen, christened 24 JUN 1824 Vang, Oppland, Norway link Iver Gulbrandsen, christened 10 NOV 1826 Vang, Oppland, Norway link Gulbrand Gulbrandsen, christened 20 APR 1829 Vang, Oppland, Norway link
Here is their brother John b.1822 running the Ellestad farm in census-1865: link
Are you confident Nels was a brother of Andrew, Iver & Gulbrand? From my point of view, they look too old to be brothers..., could they be his uncles?
I could not find any son of Gulbrand & Guri named Nels (Nils-Niels) either...

More information is needed, have you researched everything you can here? All the census/marriage/death/etc. records? I could not find anything to match your information. Where did he settle?
What 1857 census are you referring to?
Most very early Norwegian emigrants first went to Wisconsin and then moved around, sometimes several times before permanently settling down. This was before the 1862 Homestead Act and land was not free, they had to work to save money.

In 1910 'Nils Ellestad' lived in Chicago, Cook Co., Illinois. He listed that he immigrated to the US in 1867?? or 1857?? and is a naturalized citizen. In 1900 'Nils J. Ellestad' lived in Goodhue Co., Minnesota. He listed that he immigrated to the US in 1857.
There is an 1857 census for Minnesota listed in the LDS library catalog. It was a territorial census done by the federal government. |

Why are you just reposting a prior posting? Why don't you acknowledge whether any this information is correct? Why don't you answer my questions and give some more information? |

Hi, I guess Leo's reply got lost somewhere in his attempt to answer on this topic. Hopefully he will discover the error, and get back to us with his comments and thoughts...

Many thanks to Jan Peter for his helpful information regarding my distant cousin, Nils Hansen, whom I had thought to be Nels Ellestad. Now I wish to find whether, and when and how, he emigrated to America. |

Leo, you need to organize the findings already given here, and provide some answers to all the loose threads before you continue your search for any passenger record.
First of all, there is no "Nils Hansen" here.
The Nils Larsen referred to as the son of Lars Nilsen & Rangdi Gulbrandsdr was in Norway in 1865, and would doubtingly have been in the US in the late 1850's.
What kind of proof do you have of his life in the US? Where did he live? Married? Children?

My search for Nels Ellestad has been terminated, with gratitude to Jon Peter for new information about a kinsman Nils Larsen, and his siblings, that I hadn't known existed. It appears that the boy Nels Ellestad, named in the 1857 census of Newburg Township, Fillmore County, Minn., as living with my great-grandfather, is a matter of an inexplicable set of coincidental circumstances. He must not have been a brother, nor a nephew of Andrew Branson/Ellestad. |
