Seeking information about the emigration of Mikkel and Mary (also called Marit) Bolland. They appear in the US Census for 1880 in Hesper, Iowa aged 50 and 55 respectively and would probably have left Trondheim in the 1850's - or earlier. 1st child born in Iowa in 1860 so it would be before that time. I'd like to trace the ship but am unsure whether they landed in the US or in Canada. |

Recommend you read some of the many articles on this site about emigration, routes, voyages.
Have you checked the passenger database here? |

Hi, I can't help you with the emigration, but here is some info about their location in Norway:
The Bolland farm is located in Melhus, Sør-Trøndelag, and your people got married there on 10-oct-1856:
Mikkel Johansen (27) & Marit Johnsdatter (32) Marriage: 10 OCT 1856 Melhus, Sor Trondelag, Norway link
Here is their original marriage record, #31: link
It says Mikkel is born in Horg, Sør-Trøndelag, so this must be him: Mikkel Johansen Christening: 13 SEP 1829, Horg, Sør Trøndelag Parents: Johan Mikkelsen & Berit Joensdr link

Thanks...Yes I've checked passenger lists over several years but it seems a hopeless task. Nothing with those names can be found and I even did a more general search. Unfortunately I don't know the point of entry...whether Canada, or U.S. The census definitely records the births as having been in Norway and it also records their dates of birth.... and a sketchy family history notes that they came from Trondheim. |

Widow Marit Bolland, born 1825 Norway, lives in Hesper township, Winneshiek Co. Iowa for the 1900 US census. She lists her immigration year as 1858.

Jan Peter...This is wonderful and my husband will be absolutely thrilled. Is it possible for me to magnify the document which shows them leaving their home town? I have tried an ordinary magnifying glass but still can't read it very well. I'm not sure whether it records the actual ship that they left on... Still...to see a record of the actual document sends shivers up and down the spine! |

This is fast forward!
Is this them in census 1860 for Hesper, Winneshiek, Iowa? Not correct age for Marit though..., but still... do you recognize the names of the children?
Marit is born ca 1824. Her father is John Andersen Bolland, according to the marriage record.

Hi, to keep it correct, it was Trond who found their emigration..., I just located their hometown and marriage...
You can use the menu at the top (or bottom) of the page to magnify the image up to 150%. The page is from the Melhus parish records, of people leaving the parish. It says they are going to Iowa, America, but no ship name is mentioned. It just for the priest's records, he didn't know which ship they went on.
#7, 9d Fbr, Ind Mikkel Johansen, f. Inderst(?) Johan Mikkelsen og Berit Johnsdr, Bolland, 29 Aar, til Iowa i Amerika #7, Feb-09-1858, lodger Mikkel Johansen, parents Johan Mikkelsen & Berit Johnsdr, Bolland, 29 yo, to Iowa in America #6, -, ? Marit Johnsd, 33 yo
Ind, inderst: a lodger on the farm
Note: February 9th, 1858 is the date Mikkel & Marit informed the parish priest about their emigration to America. The actual emigration might have taken place several weeks later...

There could certainly be a link. What I have from the 1880 Census (all Bolland) is Ole - 20, Betsey 19, Gertie, 17 and John (14)...that must be the John whom Tron mentioned. Ole married Kaaren (we don't have surname). They had a daughter Louise and sadly when Louise was 2 her mother died in childbirth. Ole died 5 years later around 1887. Louise married Oscar Oliver Goelberg (sometimes Golberg) and they came to Saskatchewan, Canada to pioneer in the early 1900's. They are my husband's maternal grandparents. Because of changes in name (and in Norway Goelberg was Peterson!) it really is difficult! |

I have just spoken with my husband who is visiting his mother (who is 98!) in Saskatchewan and he was so excited to be able to pass along all the information that you've so kindly provided (special thanks to Trond and Jan Peter). She had always wondered when the Bollands came over from Norway and now we've been able to narrow it down thanks to you. She is a very sharp old lady with all her faculties...and it's very satisfying to be able to fill in pieces of the puzzle that have always eluded her. What a lovely Christmas gift you've given her.

I really hate to impose (given how helpful everyone has been but I had one final question....Is it possible to find out whether the name (Golberg or Goelberg) is a reference to a family farm...or is in fact a surname? The furthest back we go is to Austin Peter Goelberg, - my husband's great great grandfather.- who married Margaret Gullinrude. Austin doesn't sound like a Norwegian name so we're wondering whether he was born here..but he must have been born c 1820 or 1830...very early. They had a son Peter Oliver Goelberg (b 1858)....and they're also from Hesper, Iowa(Peter, wife and the children are buried in the Hespeler cemetery). I'm stumped on this one...would welcome suggestions for further research. |
