Looking for any family information about Martin Joachim Knudson. He was in the merchant marine and then with the Chicago Police Department. Killed in the line of duty as a Chicago Policeman on February 5, 1932. See:
http://www.odmp.org/officer.php?oid=7651

He was married to Sophie K. Strom a Chicago elementary school teacher.

When was Martin born? Was he born in Norway or in US? Did his parents live in the US? If yes, where?

Martin was born in Bergen, Norway on July 16, 1884.
I may be wrong on the Merchant Marine. He was discarged from the Army of the United States, Casual Company-1st Tank Corp, Fort Polk, as a private in 1918.
Sophie K. Strom (Knudson) his wife was a teacher at the Schubert School.

What exactly are you looking for? Family in U.S., family in Norway? No use in duplicating information.

More information would be helpful, name of parents, siblings, etc.

The1920 US census shows "Martin Knutsen" as 35 yrs old, single, works as a policeman in Chicago. But the immigration year was NOT listed for him!
I THINK the 1910 US census lists his immigration year as 1902 ?? works as some sort of fireman - type of business I cannot decipher.
What did the 1930 US census list for his immigration year?

(Thanks Jo Anne - I just could NOT read it.)
A Martin Johan Knudsen leaves from the port of Bergen, Norway on or about 22 April 1904 (should arrive through New York). Lists birth as 1882 in Bergen and occupation as "fyrboder" [stoker, fireman]. Appears to be a group of young fyrboder leaving the same day from Bergen.

Possible match from database of "Døypte i Bergen 1816-1894"

- born 16 Jul 1884 --

In the 1900 Norwegian census in Bergen -

A young man might have "stretched" his age a year or two upon occasion?? I remember when I wanted to add a couple extra years - now I tend to subtract them (by accident??)

Thanks so much for everyone's input.

Dates and descriptions can be different. His Cerificate of Naturalization and Honorable Discharge list different eye and hair colors.

The Chicago Police report lists the birthdate of 1884. However, my mother remembers the 'merchant marine' tie and your findings are probably right. Mother was a terrified 11 when her father was killed in a shootout that brought the press and hundreds of mourners to the home.
