Hi Siri, Sorry it took me so long to get back on here. Yes we made it to Norway and found the Kjonegaaar farm that my Grandfather sold. Found the church they were married in and had a great time. Would like to go back again.

Jan Peter: I'd like to add to my knowledge of the folks from Vossatrand, Hordaland, Norway.
Endre Svensen wed Britha Larsdatter on 12 Jun 1874, as did his sis, Britha Svendsen.
Yet, when they came to the USA, they became Kjonegaards.
Was this common to take the name of their homeland (area) for a last name?

Thanks,

Don Heflin now of Naples, Florida, USA

It was not uncommon for Norwegian emigrants to adapt a farm name where they had history as a surname in later life. Not uncommon at all.

Online study material to learn about Norwegian naming practices and patterns. All absolutely free - you just have to do is read or study them.

There are probably a lot of reasons that this happened. Our family story is that my grandfather, the son of Olav Larsen, deceided that there were already more than enough sons of Ole in the United States and so adopted the name of the farm where they were living. His two brothers did the same but changed the spelling slightly so the three brothers all had a different last name.

Did the sister, Brita Sveinsdtr., come to the US with her husband Knut? I know Endre and his aunts and uncles were all in the Dakotas but I wondered if she came and joined the rest.

Stephanie - these posts keep triggering emails to me because I was involved at some point in time...
