Does anyone have access to the 1930 census, and could look for Helmer (Helmar) Lund? Helmer was born 9 May 1897 in Røyken, Norway. He is shown arriving in the US 6 Sep 1923 on the Bergensfjord. Click here After his immigration, he worked for Bethlehem Steel. We understand his place of work was in the Boston area, rather than in Pennsylvania. He may have worked at Bethlehem Steel's ship building plant in Quincy, MA. Helmer returned to Norway after about 10 years in the US, married and had a family. We are curious about where he lived in the US and with whom. Thanks for any information on Helmer! |

There is someone on Rootsweb.com that has listed Helmer in his online family tree.
Helmer arrived three more times at the Port of New York:
October 15, 1926 from Oslo on the Stavangerfjord. Civil Engineer, born Røyen, immigration visa issued at Washington, D.C. on May 10, 1924. Last permanent address, Orange, New Jersey.
He took a trip on the M/S Kungsholm leaving New York on January 19, 1929, stopped at Kingston (Jamaica) on January 24, Havana, Cuba on February 1 and back to New York on February 5, 1929. There is information and pictures of the Merchant Vessel Kungsholm on this site:
http://www.norwayheritage.com/p_ship.asp?sh=kungt
Listed as 31, born Royken, last permanent address, Brookline, MA. 5’ 11”, fair, blond hair, blue eyes. Nearest friend or relative, H. Prestester, 40 Babcock St., Brookline, MA. Address in U.S. 40 Babcock St., Brookline, MA.
October 9, 1930 on the SS Bremen from Southhampton. Drafsman, born Royken, visa issued June 14, 1930, last permanent residence, Boston, MA Nearest relative, brother Magnus Lund of Sagfoss, Norway. Has resided in the U.S. from 1923-1930. Nearest friend or relative in U.S., H. Prestescaeter of Brookline, MA.
On your 1923 Ellis Island link, Helmer is #2, passenger #23 is Helge Prestesaeter, 25, engineer, planned length of stay in U.S., 2 years. Helmer's length of stay was listed as permanent. They are both going to a friend, Oscar Olson of 803 Bridge St., Bethlehem, PA.
I have been unable to find Helmer or Helge in the 1930 census. The census was done in April 1930 so they should have been there but who knows? Maybe someone else can find them. It does appear that his consistent contact was Helge.

Thanks so much for this wealth of information! It would still be nice if someone came up with a census entry for Helmer. But this is wonderful!
I have looked for Helmer on rootsweb.com, but though I found 2-3 people named Helmer Lund, none of them is the right one. Could you please provide the link?
Again, thanks so much! |
