Does someone know if there was/is a farm called Hilskaar in Sogn-Dal?

My great-great grandmother, Marie Olsdatter, was born there 29 July 1829. She came to the United States about 1845.

I know nothing more about her ancestry.

Thanks for any help.

Joy

Hi, it can be Hylleskaar in local parish Stedje in Sogndal parish, Sogn og Fjordane County in Western Norway. No church records before 1871 available on internet so far.

Hi,
Ola Olsen (1775 - 20.aug.1827) & Marta Larsdatter on the Hildeskår farm in Sogndal are registered with these children:

  • Margreta Olsdtr chr. 19-Jun-1809
  • Gjertrud Olsdtr b. 10-Feb-1811
  • Ola Olsen b. 30-Jan-1813, d. 1880
  • Randi Olsdtr b. 25-Mar-1815
  • Lars Olsen b. 14-May-1817
  • Kari Olsdtr b. 17-Dec-1819
  • Kristen Olsen b. 14-Nov-1821
  • Maria Olsdtr b. 21-Jul-1824
Her birthdate is recorded as 21-Jul-1824, not 29 July 1829.

Marriage 1) 24-Jun-1803, Ola Olsen Hildeskår & Margreta Erikdtr Flåten
Marriage 2) 09-Jun-1806, widower Ola Olsen Hildeskår & Marta Persdtr Sogndalsfjøra
Marriage 3) 28-Jun-1808, widower Ola Olsen Hildeskår & Marta Larsdtr Ølnes

Ola really had a high "consumption" of women...

Hylleskaar & Hildeskår is the same farm.

Hi,
are you sure about her approximate year of emigration? What's your first trace of her in the US? Any censuses? Location?

I've found these entries about people moving out of sogndal parish:
Maria Olsdatter Hildeskår, moved from Sogndal to Bergen on 06-Oct-1855. Unmarried.
Maria Olsdatter Hildeskår, moved from Sogndal to Bergen on 01-May-1860. Unmarried.

Bergen would be her most likely port of emigration.
It looks to be the same girl, but it could also be someone with just the same name. Hildeskår farm could be a big farm with a lot of small households under it, small holdings. People living there would all state that they lived on that farm.

Yes, I'm sure - at least that it was before 1850/1851. Marie was married to my great-great grandfather, Jens Jensen (from Aasen, Strand, Rogaland), in LaSalle county, Illinois, about 1851. They had a child by July 1852.

I believe I found Marie listed as Mary Oleson in 1850 in Eden twp, LaSalle, Illinois, with the Weston family. (I know she was working as a hired girl when Jens met her.) Also, the Illinois State Marriage Database lists a John Johnson and a Mary Olson marrying 9 December 1851 in LaSalle county.

In 1859, the family moved to Mitchell county, Iowa. They later moved to Lake Mills, Winnebago, Iowa, where Marie died on 9 June 1895.

Ok,
the girl found moving to Bergen in 1855 and 1860, was born in 1838, and she was the daughter of Ola Olsen Hildeskår (1813 - 1880), ie she is a niece of your Maria Olsdtr...
