I have two farm names that I would like to find the location of or address. If the farms are still there, I'd like to be able to contact the current owners and find out if we are related or if I might be able to see the farms, when I travel there next year. The farms are Haugedal, in the municipality of Søndeled, municiipality number 0913, in Aust Adger.

The second farm name is Akeland (Øilandsdal), also in Søndeled.

If anyone can give me some advice on how to go about doing this, I'd be very grateful. I already know that I have relatives in the Arendal area, so I will be arranging to meet with them, but that is from my Mother's side of the family and these farms are from my Father's side.

Thanks for your help.
Wanda

One of the articles Linked from this website (under Links - General Genealogy - Articles and how to) is entitled " Identifying your ancestor's farm in Norway".
The 1865 Norwegian census indicates farms called Haugedal and Akeland in Søndeled.
The 1900 Norwegian census lists Akeland and Haugedal in Søndeled.

The Søndeled (Søndeløv) area has been described in the books "Søndeled", series of 5 volumes by Lars Stiansen, Knut Jacobsen, Olav Stiansen and Arne Omland (published 1952-1979). Several of those books are available on LDS microfilm - Have you checked those?

Will those books give me exact locations in the Søndeled area?

I will check out the website you listed too! I knew that the farms were still listed in the 1900 census, that's why I thought it might be a possiblity that I might be able to find out the locations of the farms.

Thanks for your help! Wanda

Hi,
Søndeled and Risør municipalities merged in 1964, and the new municipality name became Risør.

The two farms you're quering about are very close to each other, it takes only 4 minutes to drive between those 2 farms.

Haukedal, Gnr 36, Bnr 1, owner in 1950: Jens T. Haukedal

Øylandsdal, Gnr 56, Bnr 4, owner in 1950: Ole Øylandsdal

There are severeal neighbouring Øylandsdal farm in the area, but I've reasons to believe that this is the one Halvor Berntsen with family lived on.

Note: The land register numbers are from the old Søndeled municipality. After the merge in 1964, the farms got new numbers.

Kragerø, Risør, Tvedestrand, Arendal & Grimstad... beautiful sunny coastal cities..., the best time to go would be June-August...

Jan Peter,

Thank you so much!! It's wonderful to see it mapped out. I will see what I can find out from here.

We are planning on traveling in late June or early July. We are going to spend time in Oslo, then travel southwest along the coast. We also hope to tour the western fjord area. It all looks beautiful!

Thanks again for your help!

Sounds nice!

Here are some people who lives on the farms today, according to the Norwegian white pages:

Øylandsdal

Haugedal
Stine has her mail address listed there. Looks like she's breeding horses... link I'm not sure, but she "sounds" danish..., maybe she just bought a house on the Haugedal farm property... or intermarried...

Jan Peter,
After reading your post, I quickly sent off an e-mail to Stine. I hope to hear from her. I noticed that there are many different homes listed as being Haugedal or Øylandsdal. At one time, were they large farms and then over the years they got sold off in smaller parcels, but still kept the Farm name? It's all very interesting. Large cattle ranches and plantations in the South and Southwestern United States did that.

I can't thank you enough for your help. If Stine is Danish, that would be interesting too! My Mother was Norwegian and Danish, so we are also spending a few days in Denmark on our trip, with a few days in Sweden, since my husband's family is part Swedish.

Thanks again, Wanda

Jan Peter,
I was just looking over the second map that you gave me of the locations of the farms and without knowing it, you also gave me the location of another farm in our family, Ausland, so thank you for that too! It was listed as Braaten under Ausland in the 1865 census for the Søndeled municipality. That was the farm of my great-great-great grandfather, Jakob Larsen. His grandson, Anders Isaksen, married Greger Olsen's daughter, Halvine, from the Haugedal farm.

Thanks again, Wanda

Hi,
"Braaten under Ausland" could prob. be what is called Austlandsbråten on the map, located between Haukedal and Ausland...

Hi,
Wow, they were really close together! I couldn't read Austlandsbråten on my printed copy of the map, so thanks for pointing that out. Now I wish our trip was this summer, but I'm sure I'll just get even more excited as the time for our trip gets closer.

Many thanks! Wanda
