Sigurd
You need to share his name, birth date, parents names and birth dates, and when they died. Some of this information should be available.

There was a sailors home established on Staten Island in 1833 in New York but he would not have been there. I believe he was at a facility sponsored by the Norwegian Seaman's Church in Brooklyn. Here are some websites with information about the Norwegian Seaman’s Church and the Norwegian community in Brooklyn:
http://www.kjerka.com/historien.html
Here is an except from a book about Norwegians in Brooklyn:
http://www.historycooperative.org/cgi-bin/justtop.cgi?act=justtop&url=http://www.historycooperative.org/journals/ahr/104.3/br_61.html
From the web:
Norwegian Seamen's Church-The Norwegian Seamen's Church was on 1st Place and Clinton St., Brooklyn. This was owned by the Norwegian government and was subsequently sold. There is now a small church in Manhattan. Norwegian Seamen's Church 317 E. 52nd St. New York, New York 212-319-0370.

You can order his birth certificate from the New York Municipal Archives:
http://www.nyc.gov/html/records/html/vitalrecords/home.shtml
I could not find him on any census' but that does not mean he is not there, I just could not find him.

Hi Sigurd
There is a great book titled :
The Colony that Rose from the Sea. Author is David Mauk. It's about the Norwegian settlement in Brooklyn, which was comprised mostly of seamen. Although you won't find info about individuals, it is a good general history about the colony. I think you can purchase it from NAHA. I found mine on Alibris, but your library may also be able to locate it for you. It's well worth reading if your family was from that area.

The USS Leviathan, like many ships, had more than one name and more than one owner.
In 1924, it was owned and operated by United States Line which had a New York to London route..
