I am looking for information on a family that sailed on the Primus 1850. Peter Peterson,Britha Peterson, Erica Peterson.
Possible parents are Peter Janson and Cari Janson. They sailed out of Hedviksvalla and arrived NY Sept. 20 1850.
Peter was born 1840 Norway. The family went to Wisconsin.
Peter married Britta (Brigitta)Maria Anderson and moved to Minnesota.

From where did this ship depart? Hedviksvalla? Where is that?

Is it the Swedish city of Hudiksvall in Gävleborg county?

If so, I would say this would be a swedish family. It would not be very common to go to the north-eastern coast of Sweden to emigrate if you were a family from Norway.

How do you know Peter was born 1840 in Norway?

Jan Peter

I looked at the passenger list, it lists the Swedish Schooner Primus. All the passengers' names are -sson- which is a Swedish spelling. The captains name Carlson is also a Swedish spelling instead of Carlsen.

The manifest states the ship left from Hedviksvalla but doesn't state a country.

However, the passenger list states they all were from Norway but that could easily be a mistake; Swedes, Danes and Norwegians got mixed up.

What names did they go by in the U.S.? Have you found them in any census?

Hi Lynn,
I have a couple of questions for you. Do you know the areas of Wisconsin or Minnesota that they settled in? There are many Peter Peterson's, both Norwegian and Swede, born in 1840 and residing in Wisconsin and Minnesota, according to the U.S. Census from 1860 - 1920. It was a very common name.

Thanks, Wanda
