Horten is in Vestfold and their church records are online starting in 1855, you may find his moving out record there:

You could rent the microfilms for previous years at a local Family History Center.

Charles is likely Carl or Karl so I think he might be Karl August Hansen born on farm Rĝren in Borre municipality in Vestfold county Feb. 19. 1846, Confirmed in Horten Sep. 30. 1860, nr 27. Parents: "Gaardbruger"/Farmer Hans Kristoffersen and Hustru/Wife Karen Marie Mathiasdr? http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=5594&idx=5594&uid=ny&idx_side=-179

Carl August Hansen was bap. as nr 23 march 8. 1846 on farm Rĝren. http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=1233&idx_id=1233&uid=ny&idx_side=-7. On 1865 census, Borre municipality in Vestfold the family are living on Rĝren in Borre, Carl and his brother Conrad as seamen and 4 sisters, Anne Marie, Andrea, Johanne and Gustava. Why Carl was Bap. in Horten town the records don´t tell, they was all born in Borre except father Hans who was born in Sem, a nearby municipality.

Hi Robbie

The parish registers are on line and I have had a look for his confirmation without any luck. I too was looking for Carl/Karl. Do any of his children have Norwegian names? If so they may have been named for some of his family in Norway. If you have his naturalisation certificate you can check at the National archives to see if any other members of the family were naturalised. you mentioned that he was born around 1852 and not 1846. On his naturalisation certificate it should tell you what ship he arrived on and where he came from. Have you checked the shipping records to see if there is any information about him in them? The name and spelling Hanson is usually Swedish and not Norwegian from what I know but I could be very wrong and am happy to be corrected. Regards Kerrie

Hi Robbie.
A new Carl August born in Horten about 1850.
In the 1865 census he is listed as Carl August Oluffsen* age 15 which means he likely used his father´s last name Hansen. His mother Anne Helene Hansen* has also taken her husband´s last name Hansen. Both parents was born in Sweden. Oluff Magnus Hansen was a merchant "Ĝlhandler"- Selling beer and lived in Sĝndre Braarudgade/Southern Brċrud street. Since none of this siblings seems to be confirmed in Horten most likely this family moved from Horten to another area after 1865. No migration records for this period are still available online. http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=35&filnamn=f60703&gardpostnr=427&personpostnr=4998&merk=4998#ovre

Hi Robbie,
to start wit the marriage records in Hof parish Sunday oct. 15.1848:
Ungkarl/Bachelor Oluf Magnus Hansen was born in Lidkĝping in Sweden, age 23, age 27, son of Hans Magnussen
Pige/Unmarried girl Anne Helene Hansdr born in Sweden, age 24, daughter of hans Hansen.

Godparents was ??Johannes Jacobsen and ?? Sven Jacobsen

next column: "Af hvem tillysningen er forlangt", a bit hard to translate(Einar is good in this) but I think it has to do with who announced to the authorities: Brudgom/the Bridegroom.

Couple nr 12 as you have pointed out.
http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=1245&idx_id=1245&uid=ny&idx_side=-150

The em. records need some more look ups, pehaps they first moved from Hof to another parish.

Since my name has been mentioned I can try to make a small contribution.

I have not found the marriage record in question - only one couple married in Hof Sunday 15 1848 - Borger Torkildsen and Anne Olsdr

The heading of the column "Af hvem tillysningen er forlangt" relates to the announcement of the wedding - should take place three times - to ascertain that nobody would raise objections to the wedding. The column heading in english would be something like "Who has asked for the announcement" - the answer in this case then was the bridegroom.

The days for the announcement (in the church) are given in the column to the left.

I just saw it, Oluf Magnus Hansen is in the record for Oct 7 - he was a "snedker" (carpenter). Too much of the first names of the best men is gone due to the scanning so the middle names will have to do. (The second best man will be Sven Jonsen then)

Hi,
you're thinking about Magnus Christensen (45), born in Modum, Buskerud?
He is born 17 Dec 1825, by parents Christen Carlsen & Kiersti Abrhamsdr.

I can not see any connection to Oluf Magnus Hansen. Isn't Oluf Magnus born in Sweden as well?

Children to Oluf Magnus Hansen & Anne Helene Hansdr:

Axel Emanuel, chr 10 JUN 1849 Borre, Vestfold
Carl August, chr 27 JUL 1851 Borre, Vestfold
Frithiof Ferdinand, chr 07 MAY 1854 Borre, Vestfold
Johan Alfred, chr 11 MAY 1856 Borre, Vestfold
Fritz Sigvard, chr 26 DEC 1858 Borre, Vestfold
Rudolph Wilhelm, chr 22 SEP 1861 Borre, Vestfold
Oscar Marinius, chr 25 DEC 1864 Borre, Vestfold
Hans Olaus, chr 11 NOV 1866 Borre, Vestfold

Hi,
the family in the 1865 census for Horten I pointed out March 29., all children born in Horten parish http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=35&filnamn=f60703&gardpostnr=427&personpostnr=4998&merk=4998#ovre
is the same family Jan Peter pointed out abowe, but now they all are born in Borre parish.

A possible explanation of been "born" in two parish´s:
In 1855 5000 people lived in Horten town in Borre parish. The result was that Horten became independent parish in 1865.
To fall between two chairs, a Norwegian saying.

Hi,
Carl August was born July 12. 1851.
His Confirmation was taken place in Borre church June 10. 1866, nr 84.
http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=1235&idx_id=1235&uid=ny&idx=ny&idx_side=-100

The question now is, did this Carl August emigrate to Australia.

Robbie,
here is the digitised parish registers from Vestfold County, emigration records from Horten between 1871-75 are not online yet, but they will come, perhaps soon. Emigration is right page under "Utflyttede(ogsaa Bĝrn-including Children)"
http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_fylke=7&idx_kommune=Alle&idx_kilde=Alle&idx_periode=&idx_textsearch=&js=j

This is also a possible link, perhaps many look ups, but....
