Hi, I know my great grandfather came over from Norway in 1868, Helge Halvorson Skadeland (don't know if that is the way it was spelled) I know the place was Skadeland, Buskared, Eggedal, Norway.I can't find him on any ship or where he went when he got here. I think Winneshiek co in Iowa but can't find anything in the records there either. Can you help? Thanks !

More information would be helpful, is this the same "Helga Skadeland" who is in Traill Co. North Dakota in the 1900 US census? Wife Eli; sons Henry, Tosten, Ingvald; daughters Ingrid, Christine, Ella, etc. etc.??
When was your Helge born? how complete is your research for information AFTER emigration? You seem unsure of the Winneshiek Co. IA location - so what location(s) are you sure of?

Kċre, I think you are correct with what you wrote...if he was born about 1843 according to the census that Hopkins wrote about, then this would be his birth record #11
http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?urnread_imagesize=full&info=ingen&hode=nei&show=8&uid=14660&js=j
because the parents are the same. If he emigrated between 1863-1865, he may not be in the 1865 census.

Hi both and thanks for assistance, I was confused when i could not find him in the 1865 census

Helge was born on Skadeland nordre (northern) in Eggedal Feb. 8. 1843, nr 11. son of Halvor Gundersen and Aase Tostensdatter in the 1865 census: http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=8508&idx_id=8508&uid=ny&idx_side=-8

Helge was usually a girls name, look behind his 1. name Helge, the pastor has written Pige (girl) and then canceled it.

1920 Mr. H H Skadeland lists year of immigration as 1865. 1910 Mr. Skadeland lists year of immigration as 1865. 1900 he lists year of immigration as 1864 (born 1843 in Norway) . All three censuses find him in Traill Co., North Dakota.

If he was from Eggedal parish of Sigdal district it would be likely that he left Norway from the port of Oslo/Kristiania. No emigration records before 1867 for Oslo are generally available. But if he ARRIVED through port of Quebec you might find an arrival record in passenger lists for that port.... if not Quebec then perhaps New York?, Boston?, Baltimore?, etc.

Helge sister Ingerid Halvorsdatter Skadeland emigrated April 11.1866, age 26, nr 26. My guess: someone she knew well had sendt for her.

It looks like Helge Halvorsen went to Iowa with a wife, Anna, had 2 children. Anna must have died after the 2nd child, and Helge remarried Eli, who was born in Iowa.

This looks like it would fit in here!

Tami - Links to pages from an Ancestry subscriber will NOT work when posted as above. Both of those links take us only to a pages advertising subscriptions to Ancestry!
It would probably be more productive to just list the particular census year and location (state, county, township; page number?) and let the originalresarcher use your helpful hints to find the census page themselves.

The first one posted in the box right above Hopkins is the 1870 census for Lincoln, Winneshiek, Iowa with Anna b abt 1843 in Norway and 2 children: Halvor b abt 1878 and the other one starts with N b abt 1879 both in Iowa.

The 2nd one is a Family Data Collection-Individual records for Halvor Skadeland, spouse Caroline Mathilda Nygaard, Parents: Helge Halvorsen Skadeland and Anna Rugland, birth place: Decorah, Winneshiek, Iowa, birthdate 26 Dec 1867, Marriage place, Decorah, Winneshiek, Iowa, Marriage date: 14 Jan 1891, Death place: Benson, Maddock, North Dakota, death date: 29 Jun 1949.

I'll remember to list where it is and the info in it. : )

This information came off of ancestry.com
