In this death record, what does forsørgjar mean? I couldn't find it in the dictionary I have. I have a feeling it has something to do with charity, but I don't know.

Also, another question: what does "husmandsenke uden Jord, Spinder" mean? I know uden is without and jord is soil or earth.....I guess I mainly want the first word!!

Thank you!!

Tami

forsørgjar in this situation could be a single parent or a person supporting a family.
husmandsenke - cotters widow
uden jord - without land
spinder - in this case her "occupation" is to spin yarn

Just to supply to Einars excellent translations, forsørgjar can be direcly translated into breadwinner, the family role of providing a livelihood.

Well, this whole family was poor, poor, poor according to the information I found....how sad. In the death record for the "breadwinner" it said she died a pauper. Thank you for the information!
