hello i am from norway an had an uncle who went to america back in 1889. i have searched boarding list for ships, with no success. Jens was born in Flakstad, Norway, on the farm of Qvalvik in 1863-4 the info i was givin by family members who are no longer living is that he was a fisherman somewhere in usa moved to Astoria usa, where he worked on a trolley there. we know he had 2 daughters but not who he was married to. what i fear is that he changed his name once there or was changed by the officials of that time. i have contacted the archivist in Astoria, Oregon an he is not listed to have worked there. but there were some Gjertsens with the swedish name ending of "son". could the usa had changed his name to that. also his father was Gjert Andreassen an his mother was Kristine Tomine Gjertsdatter, also of Flakstad. thank your any help of any kind.

1900 census - Astoria, Clatsop County, Oregon (1771 Irving Avenue). Jen or Jens Jackson, 36 years old, born Jan? or June? 1864 in Norway, immigrated 1889, works as a fisherman. Married to Anna, 31 yrs old, born Norway. Two children - daughter 'Gertie' 7 yrs old and a 4 yr old son (name illegible). There was a 3rd child who is no longer living.

"James Jackson" in Astoria, Clatsop County, Oregon (1771 Irving Avenue) in the 1910 US census, 45 years old, born Norway, immigrated 1890, naturalized US citizen, works with the street car system (trolleys) possibly as a foreman. This man is married to Anna and has two daughters, Gertrude (17 yrs old) and Mildred (4 yrs old). They have had 5 chldren but only 2 are still alive.

The same man appears in the 1920 US census of Astoria, Clatsop County, Oregon (174 Franklin Street), as James A. Jackson, 56 years old, born Norway, immigrated 1890, working as a millwright in a sawmill. His wife is listed as Gertrude A. (but appears to be the same as previous Anna by age, birthplace, etc) with 3 children living at home - including the same daughter Mildred (14 yrs old), a son James D. (9 yrs old) and a daughter whose name starts with Ber.... (6 yrs old).
Perhaps he lists a middle initial A. for his father's name, Andreassen? A common little way to honor a parent by using some part of their name.

In many parts of America the ...sen ending of Norwegian names became ...son. He would have changed his name himself (probably when he completed US naturalization) - that would not have been done to him by someone else.
What does Gjertsen SOUND like in Norway? I don't know the GJ sound.
I've seen many Norwegian emigrants who used the name James in place of Jens.

Jens Antons confirmation record is #5 here http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=6661&idx_id=6661&uid=ny&idx_side=-84
He was born Jan 10 1864 and baptized May 17 same year. He then lived at Bergland but was born at Kvalvig. His father was Gjert Johan Andreasen and mother Kirstine Tomine Kirstine Gjertsdtr. (the second Kirstine cannot be right/neccesary).
They were married Nov 8 1847 see #6 here http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=2639&idx_id=2639&uid=ny&idx_side=-174. Gjert 26 years came from Indre Sand paa Qualvig, his father was Andreas Olsen and Kirstine 24 years came from Ramberg, her father being Gjert Christophersen.
Before Gjert and Kirstine were married they had an "uægte" daughter, see #21 here http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=2639&idx_id=2639&uid=ny&idx_side=-56
In 1850 they had their second child, see #9 here http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=2639&idx_id=2639&uid=ny&idx_side=-64
in 1852 their third child #39 here http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=2639&idx_id=2639&uid=ny&idx_side=-73
