Hello,
Could somebody please tell me what the words next to my ancestors confirmation records mean? I know that the words refer to their knowledge of the catechism but I can't determine exactly what they mean.
Digitalarkivet...Telemark...Kviteseid 1787-1799...Confirmations...Page 265...ANNE OLSDATTER RUI. Then page 272...TORJUS VETLESEN HOSOM.
The last two columns I do not understand. Thanks so much for any help.
Sincerely, Jan

Hmmm....not easy to read. But the first column probably is the grade they got, and the second seems to be the Priests name. The grades could be : Very good, Good, Quite good and so on. It looks like Måtelig...and that means quite good. .. |

Hei, as you say, the two columns are about how good they knew their catechism.
The first column is about how good they could read the catechism from the book, the second is how good they could read it by heart, ie. memorized. So the second is not the priest's name, but rather the chapter from the catechism they where able to read out of memory.
The coloumn headers are Leser i Bog and Leser uden av.
Maadelig can (today) be translated into moderate, reasonable. It could have had a different meaning 200 years ago... I believe the second ones read "Lige saa", which means likewise, i.e. the same chapter as the pupil/disciple above.
