Everyone's been so helpful I thought I'd throw out a family mystery and see if anyone can provide leads.
My gg-grandfather Johannes Augustus Pedersen was born 1839 at Lillemalterud Farm, Aas Parish, Vestre Toten, Oppland (christened 09 Jun 1839). He came to America in 1867.
I am trying to find out if his wife Kari/Karen Gilbertson (Gulbrandsdtr?) came with him or if he came alone. I know nothing about Kari/Karen and am very curious to locate where she was from in norway. I do know that she was born 28 Dec 1838 and imm. in 1866/67. Her father was supposedly Gilbert Johansen (Gulbrand?).
I would really appreciate any help or guidance with this one because we have been looking for quite sometime.
Kind Regards, Mike |

I believe I previously gave you the link to the Vestre Toten church records, have you looked there and/or ordered microfilms for what is not online? Here is what is also available for Vestre Toten online on Digitalarkivet:
http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/WebMeta.exe?slag=vismeny&fylkenr=&katnr=&emnenr=&aar=&dagens=&knr=529
You are working on multiple postings, people areas, etc. all at once. Concentrating a one particular person/family and exhausting all outlets including rental microfilms, contacting local historical societies, ordering records is a less confusing way to go. Proper family research takes years. A little friendly advice. |

Then your Johannes is the unmarried son living on Lillemalterud at the time of the 1865 census (Dec 31 1865)? http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=4&filnamn=f60529&gardpostnr=190&sokefelt=skjul
Possibly 1 or 2 years of Vestre Toten church parish records to check for a marriage record...? a 'leaving the parish notation? Running a little early to hope for entry in the Oslo/Kristiania databases - those don't seem complete for 1867 and are non-existent for 1866 and earlier.
Digitalarkivet scanned parish records are not responding for me at this time - perhaps you'll have better luck.

Hi there,
The 1865 census is basically the last norwegian record I can locate on Johannes Pedersen. Vestre Toten church records aren't very complete for 1866 and 1867?
Thanks! |

If the bride was from another parish you'd expect to find the marriage there - rather than the groom's home parish.
The Olso/Kristiania emigration records are not complete for 1867. Perhaps you misunderstood me.

Oh I see now...I just wonder if I will ever be able to find his bride Karen since I don't know where she was from. I think that if she is not recorded on any emigration records with Johannes then I'd have to use her birth date and search parish by parish! That would take a lifetime! |

Hi Jan,
Johannes Augustus Pedersen and his wife Kari/Karen first settled in Wisconsin (maybe Dane County?) before moving to MN in 1870. I gather they were in WI for about 3 years since Johannes arrived in 1867 (and possibly Karen).
In America his name was John P. Rud and Carrie. I thought that if I located his emigration records that she may be on them, but otherwise I just don't see finding information on her. Her bday was 28 Dec 1838.
On another note, I also have family named Weberg from Horten...maybe there is a connection!
Kind Regards, Mike |
