I am a novice Geneologist. I have managed to trace my ancestors back to Sør-Trøndelag/Byneset. My gg-grandfather (Isak Hoyem) emigrated to America in 1888 with his brother (Jens Hoyem). Jens returned to Norway and after un-americanizing his last name (back to Høiem) shows up on the 1900 census. His son took the name Ole Jenssen. Looking for help (online or other ways) on how to trace his family to present day. Thank you.

Hi,
I doubt that Isak and Jens are brothers.... do you have any evidence of that? Other than a common lastname of Høyem, and that both are from Byneset, Sør-Trøndelag?

I think they could be cousins, though, that Jens' father and Isak's mother where siblings..

Emigration to Ishpeming, Marquette County, Michigan on 22 mar 1888:

Sivert Høyem (23)
Marit Høyem (16)
Isak Høyem (19)
Jens Høyem (22)
Elen Høyem (22)

Looks like Sivert could be an older brother to Jens, and that he emigrated some years earlier, and came back to "pick up" Jens and other Høyems from his hometown...

Isak was home in 1893, and went back with older brother Arnt.

Ole Jensen Høiberg was confirmed Sept 27 1903, see #18 here http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=2736&idx_id=2736&uid=ny&idx_side=-78
where it also is stated that he was born and baptized in Amerika. He was living at Høiberg, his father was "arbeider" (worker) Jens Olsen Høiem and mother was Elen Olsdatter.
Ragna Jensdatter was confirmed Oct 1 1905, see #33 here http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=2736&idx_id=2736&uid=ny&idx_side=-81
Odin Oscar Jensen was confirmed Oct 4 1908, see #13 here http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=2737&idx_id=2737&uid=ny&idx_side=-84
and the youngest girl Emma Ingeborg Jensdatter Høiberg was confirmed Oct 5 1913, see #31 here http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=2737&idx_id=2737&uid=ny&idx_side=-95
Further tracing would be posible marriages - but where? Girls were normally married where their parents lived - boys would probably have to go somewhere else - unless they stayed at the parents farm. Maybe you can look up if they registered themself for leaving the parish. Lots of work ahead - good luck.

They arrived from Liverpool to the Port of New York on April 7, 1888 aboard the Gallia owned by the Cunard Line, laborers, steerage, destination U.S.A. They would have been processed for immigration at the Castle Garden Immigration Station.

There is alot of information on this site about the Cunard Line.

Confusing - but interesting
Ole and Marit were married 1859 #8 http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=2364&idx_id=2364&uid=ny&idx_side=-239
Ole came from Aalberg, father was Arnt Olsen, Marit came from Høiem father was Isak Sivertsen, best men Sivert Høiem and Engelbret Aalberg.

Ole Arntsen (lodging at Høiem) and Marit Isaksdtr. first? son Arnt see #18 http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=2364&idx_id=2364&uid=ny&idx_side=-32 - godfathers Andrea Arntsdtr., Anders Arntsen, Sivert Isaksen,Lars Isaksen and Hilde Sivertsdtr.

Their second? son Isak see #53 http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=2364&idx_id=2364&uid=ny&idx_side=-72 - godfathers Hans Sverre Isaksen, Karen Andersdtr., Ole Jørgensen, Isak In...? and Karen Arntsdtr.

Ole Isaksen and Ingeborg Clementsdtr. first "uægte" child Isak see #18 http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=2363&idx_id=2363&uid=ny&idx_side=-62
(Ole and Ingeborg got married #3 http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=2363&idx_id=2363&uid=ny&idx_side=-185 Oles father Isak Sivertsen, Ingeborgs father Clement Johnsen - best men Sivert Isaksen and Anders Andersen) - godfathers Sivert Isaksen (Præstegaarden), Jens Larsen, Smed Rostad, Maren Andersdtr.
(see also godfathers for Ingebrigt Andersen and Karen Isaksdtr. #19 Ane - Maren Andersdtr. (Præstegaarden), Karen Ingebrigtsdtr., Maren Larsdtr., Sivert Isaksen (Præstegaarden), Ole Larsen)

Ole and Ingeborgs son Jens #25 http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=2364&idx_id=2364&uid=ny&idx_side=-52 - godfathers Karen Olsdtr., Ingeborg Isaksdtr., Sara Sivertsdtr., Jakob Olsen, Ole Jørgensen and Ole Olsen.

Seems quite clear that Isak and Jens are cousins - not brothers.

Yes, hoping Jens and Isak were brothers was a stretch. I got excited when I saw that they came to Ishpeming together and "assumed" they were siblings. The word assume is probably a cardinal sin among geneologists. Thank you all for the help. This gives me a lot to go on for now. Fascinating stuff. My gg-grandfather was just a face in a picture at my Grandma's house until I became interested. I'm 34 now, I just wish I had shown interest earlier when some of my older family members were still alive. My grandma is 50% Norwegian 50% Swedish. My wife's family (Nordberg) is from Norway as well. Her family kept much better family records. The ultimate goal is to travel to Norway and possibly meet distant cousins. I am realistic though, just visiting the areas where my ancestors lived would be great enough. Thanks again!!!!!

To all that may be interested, I have great news that I would like to share. I have discovered that a cousin from Norway has been trying to contact family members since last year. He managed to contact my grandmother's nephew. It took a year to get his contact info from my second cousin but I finally did and within minutes today I was in contact with my cousin Olav from Norway. His great-grandfather Arnt and my gg-grandfather Isak were brothers. I feel fortunate to have someone from my family on the other side of the pond as interested in this as I am! He has been a wealth of knowledge complete with pictures. Thanks to the people in this forum for the help I was given and I hope to repay the favor in the future.
