I'd like to find some Norwegian Olsen cousins during a visit I plan there in August. "No problem finding Olsens in Norway," you say? Well, finding the right ones may not be so easy, what with privacy regulations and all.

Per my previous research (including significant help from this website -- thank you!) here's my gg grandfather's family:

Descendants of Ole Karl Jonsen

1 Ole Karl Jonsen b: 1811 Nordalens Præstgjeld, Norway d: Unknown
.. +Gurine Rasmusdtr b: 1823 Nordalens Præstgjeld, Norway d: Unknown
...2 Inger Regine Olsdtr b: 19 Sep 1847 Nordalens Præstgjeld, Norway d: Unknown
...2 Johan Olsen b: 06 Oct 1848 Nordalens Præstgjeld, Norway d: 13 Nov 1920 Portland, OR e: 18 Mar 1874 Allan Line, from Bergen
....... +Oline Christiansdtr b: 26 Oct 1847 Engeset Farm, Nordalen, Norway m: Abt. 1880 US? d: 16 Mar 1942 Clackamas Cty, OR e: 10 May 1879 From Bergen, Stjerne Linien
...2 Else Olsdtr b: 12 Dec 1850 Nordalens Præstgjeld, Norway d: Unknown e: 1888 Status of "gardmanndtr" (farm-owner's daughter?)
...2 Tomas Olsen b: 03 Jun 1853 Norddalen, Norway d: Unknown e: 02 Nov 1888 (Second?) From Bergen, Amerik. Borger Line
...2 Ole Olsen b: 20 Dec 1855 Nordalens Præstgjeld, Norway d: 1855 Nordalens Præstgjeld, Norway
...2 Nicoline Birgitte Olsdtr b: 25 Jul 1859 Nordalens Præstgjeld, Norway d: Unknown
...2 Elen Malene Olsdtr b: 09 Apr 1864 Nordalens Præstgjeld, Norway d: Unknown
...2 Jens Olsen b: 09 Apr 1864 Nordalens Præstgjeld, Norway d: Unknown e: 06 May 1881 From Bergen, Amerikanske Linje

Ole Karl's gårdsnavn was Gjerde and Gurine Rasmusdtr (my gg grandmother) came from gårdsnavn Lingaas. All this is in Møre og Romsdal.

Four children emigrated (Johan (my g grandfather), Else, Tomas (twice?) and Jens (one of twins)). One died as an infant (Ole). But three sisters I'm still tracking (Inger Regine, Nicoline Birgitte, and Elen Malene (the other twin)). Might they have stayed in Norway and started families of their own?

If I could track down contemporary descendents of these sisters that would be ideal. If I hit the jackpot, some one in that branch of the family is also a genealogy enthusiast.

I'm going to compose another query like this one, with details about my gg grandmother's siblings, which I'll also post to this most-helpful forum.

As before, research suggestions are most welcome.

Did you try writing to local newspapers?
http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~norway/na32.html

Also look for any local genealogical and/or historical societies.

Finding Olsens in Norway doesn't mean they are relatives. There are links on this site about basic Norwegian research including further links to look-up volunteers for the farm books. These may bring the family tree into the late 20th century. First you have to determine whether the sisters emigrated or not.

Hi,
you say that Ole Karl Jonsen is from the Gjerde farm. When did he live there?
In 1865, the family can be found on the Grønningsæter farm in Nordalen parish, Møre & Romsdal.

And did this family relocate to the Kavli farm in the neighboring parish Grytten??

In 1886, there is one Ole Olsen Gjerde on the Kavli ytre farm in Grytten, Møre og Romsdal. (And also one Thomas Olsen on a neighboring Kavli farm)

And here is one Elen Malene Olsdatter Kavli (18), emigrating on 27 Apr 1882. The age fits with your Elen Malene, and destination reads Portland, OR.

Nicoline Olsdatr Kavli (20), leaving Bergen on 19 Apr 1880, together with brother Jens Olsen Kavli .
Doesn't the Jenz Olsen Gjerde leaving in 1881 seem to old...?

And is this your Inger Regine? Also on a Kavli farm in Grytten. Her mother widow Gurine Rasmusdt lives on the farm...

Did you go through the Nordal bygdebøker? You should probably check out the Kavli farm(s) in Grytten as well...

The Kavli farm is located in Isfjorden, at the end of the Romsdalsfjorden.

This is great material...many thanks. I have a copy of the Norddal Bygdebøker, and it has been an extraordinarily valuable source. But Leonhard Tafjord (the principal author) published the Ættebok chapter in 1952, so the youngest of my cited relatives (even the distant ones) were born 60+ years ago. Thus, my queries using alternative routes. Thanks again for your help, and thanks to other commenters as well. TFO

I think the following reference from volume 2 of the Norddal Bygdebøker (page 168) may help with this Gjerde-Grønningsæter question:

"Om Ole Karl Jonsen som bytte gard med Børre Arnesen Grønningsæter i 1855, sjå Gjerde [114]. Ole Karl selde garden stykke etter stykke: Holeplassen -- Olagarden og bygsla bort Vigenplassen. Han selde til slutt storparen tl Kristian Rasmussen Alstadsæter [205]."

The [bracket] numbers cross-reference the paragraphs in volume 1 (Ættebok), organized by gårdsnavn.

My Norwegian is too limited to properly translate the paragraph above, so any assistance will be appreciated.

It says:

"About Ole Karl Jonsen who exchanged farm with Børre Arnesen Grønningsæter in 1855, see Gjerde [114].
Ole Karl sold the farm piece by piece: Holeplassen -- Olagarden and let on lease Vigenplassen. He finally sold the major part to Kristian Rasmussen Alstadsæter [205].
"

So it looks like Børre Arnesen got the Gjerde farm in 1855, and Ole Karl Jonsen moved to Grønningsæter. Then it looks like he sold the Grønningsæter farm piece by piece... I don't know when Ole Karl died, but it must for sure be his wife widow Gurine Rasmusdt who is on the Kavli ytre farm in Grytten in 1900.

Thanks for the translation assistance. I agree with your interpretation, and will incorporate it into my emerging family history.
