My family records indicate Olaf Martin Olsen b 1-13-1877 d 03-02-1941 (Wife was Jennie Kiddelsen) migrated from Stavenger Norway with his parents Samuel Martin (no birth/death dates) and Hanna (Iverson) Olsen from NY Ellis Island approx. 1887. What we hear through family recollections but what I cannot verify is that our last name used to be HORNFIELD (or a variation thereof) and Samuel or Olaf changed the name when they emigrated, The reason for choosing Olsen supposedly is that Samuel was a ship's carpenter for the Olsen Shipping Co. From that website, it indicates that emigration records prior to 1925 from Stavenger were destroyed in a fire so I do not know how to find them. I cannot find anything on my family online from Ancestry, rootsweb or familytree.com Help!!!

Ellis Island did not begin to process immigrants until 1892 so they did not come through Ellis Island, before that they were processed at Castle Garden. There are many articles on this site about ports, routes, voyages, immigration centers.

The Stavanger church records are available on line, you can search for birth records, marriage, moving out records, there is a help section:

However, they may not have been from Stavanger, just "left" from there.

Have you found them in all available U.S. census, 1900/1910/1930? That would give their immigration date and other valuable information.

There are links on this site that can help you understand beginning Norwegian research. Also recommend you read some of the articles on this site especially "Those Norwegian Names" so you can understand that Olsen was a patroynomic name. Hornfield is not a Norwegian name.

You cannot reply on undocumented family stories/history. Start with yourself and work back to put all the pieces together and don't be surprised if you find a few skeletons in the closet. Obtain all birth, marriage, death, military records, census.

Here is a possible clue from the 1900 census for Illinois, Cook County, Chicago, ward 15.

Olson, Samuel b. Jan 1851, age 49, married 24 years. Immigrated 1884, Carpenter.
Hannah, wife, b. Aug. 1855, age 44, 2 children 2 living, immigrated 1886.
Olif, son, b. 1877, age 22 Single, immigrated 1886, Bicycle maker.

It would help to know what state they lived in.

Thank you! Both replies were helpful and yes, I believe the Olson you located for me is the correct Samuel Hannah and Olaf because they do have a Chicago Illinois background. Maybe all their info is under Olson and it wasn't changed to Olsen until my grandfathers birth in early 1900's. The dates match up pretty close.

Maybe Hornfield connection is a misnomer afterall (even though Olaf's youngest son is still alive and living in Georgia and he is the one recalling information.)
