Up date to a previous post. I previously asked to fing Anders Tostensen and Ginhild. I have since found the names are Odd Thorstensen/Torstensen born 1825-30 in Norway and his wife Gunhild Evansdatter born 1835 Norway. They were in the USA by 1856.
Sorry about the mixup.

I had seen a census with Aude Tostenson and family and I assumed that they meant to spell Ander. Interesting. So look for Odd and Aude.

Did you ever say what made you think they were from Telemark? Did you find it listed somewhere?

I am researching other family members all are from Fyresdal but I am not sure about Odd and Gunhild. The census you found with Aude was it the 1880 Minnesota Census? That was them but the name Aude was probably americanized. I found their girls baptism records in Fillmore, Minnesota and he is listed as Odd.

Renee,

Do you know where in Illinois Thomas was born, because that could be listed as a destination on a ship's passenger list?

Also, I think these topics should be joined if possible. It's hard to go back and forth between the two, to see what has already been posted.

Are the other family members related to Odd or Gunhild and did they arrive in America together? Those relatives might make it possible to find Odd and Gunhild easier. It sounds like you think that they were married in Norway and then came over, right?

Good luck! Wanda

I do not know where in Ill Thomas was born, I have not been able to find him. Also Odd and Gunhild went to America way before the other family that went in 1865 and landed in Quebec port. They are only related to Odd's family because Odd's daughter Berthe married their son Thore Halvorsen (born 1864 in Moland, Fyresdal, Telemark,) in 1890 in
Houston, Minnesota. Thore's parents were Halvor Thoresen and Torbjor Olesdatter both from Moland.

Thanks Renee.

So you are saying that they weren't related in Norway, that they became related after their children married in the United States, right? If that is the only connection to Telemark, I don't think we can necessarily assume that they are from there. Possible, definitely, because Telemark had so many early emigrants, but I don't think you want to limit the search to only there.

You said you have baptismal records for their daughters, so you must have gone through the church records. Were you able to find church records for the time that they probably would have moved to Fillmore County, because there may be information listed about them, when they joined the church and that can sometimes include the parish or county in Norway that they came from?

Good luck! Wanda

Thanx Wanda, I did not go thru the church records in Minnesota. I live in Oregon and I am disabled so I can not travel. The info I have is what someone sent to me. The Church and parish in Minnesota was Elstad. I do not know if that tells anything about where they were in Norway.

Renee,

I've been searching Lutheran records on microfilm this week and they hold a lot of information about their members. I was able to do the searching through the historical site in my state, but I think you would need to either find out if the LDS has the microfilm and rent it or have someone do a look-up in the parish records in Elstad. If Elstad is in Fillmore County, contacting the historical society might shed some light on the church records for that parish. They may even have copies there or do look-ups. If that historical society is as good as it looks on their website, I would definitely check with them.

Can someone with experience renting microfilm from the LDS, please explain the process of looking up the ALC records that she needs and renting them? I haven't had to do that, yet. You may also be able to contact the ELCA region for that area and explain that you're disabled and that you would like help in finding this information in the Elstad parish in Minnesota. They may or may not have church records from the 1850's, but it's worth a try. http://www.elca.org/archives/regsyn.html
Minnesota is in region 3, so send an e-mail to the archivist there and they should be able to help you. They helped me to figure out which reels would possibly have the information I was looking for, because some churches had joined together and I didn't know what the years were when they joined. Give it a try. They've always gotten back to me within a day or two with a response.

Good luck, Wanda
