Yes, I suppose there is - The Meldal/Meldahl family can be traced back to Steen Evensøn (ca 1612-1680), reverend in Meldal around 1672 (this year his portrait was painted - and it's supposed to still be hanging in Meldal church...)

Only problem is to find Karl's father and the connection to the family. Unfortunately the father is dead before 1900, the 1875 cencus is not on the net - and in 1865 Karl wasn't born yet.

Neither is any church records for the area at the time. So I don't know how to help you connect you to the Melda(h)l family...

But: there is one Anton Meldal in the 1900 cencus:

And there is one Carl Magnus Meldal born 28. october 1866 (baptised in Fosnes 6. january 1867) in Family search wich fits very good to being "yours" :

Parents:
Father: MELDAL VILHELMSEN Family

And, according to the 1865 census a couple that looks very much like them does have a son named Anton:

But this is as far as I can get - at least at present...

Hi Erik In the LDS there is CARL MAGNUS MELDAL born in Fosnes
Father: MELDAL VILHELMSEN
Mother: ELEN PAULINE PEDERSDR
Also in the same batch is LAURA JACOBA PEDERSEN
Father: PETTER ANDREAS WILHELMSEN
Mother: ELEN P. PEDERSDR Click Here
I believe that Meldal and Petter are the same person. In the 1865 census Click Here He is listed as Peter A M (Meldal??) There is a son Anton so this also fits with your info. That plus the fact that in the 1900 census Carl is listed as born in fosnes makes me pretty sure that this is his family
I don't know what relationship if any Marie Kristiansdatter is to Carl The 1875 census is available on microfilm at the LDS. If you could locate the family on that you could prove that this is the correct family
Carla

It looks like I am at a dead end until the 1865 census comes out. I guess I was hoping that someone might have thier family traced back and see that there was a brother named Carl (Karl).

Thank you so much....

You'll be able to find many original parish records for the various members of the family now as online scanned copies at the Digitalarkivet website.

For example the birth/baptism discussed above for Carl Meldalsen as was shown in the IGI index (see record entry #3)
http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=2519&idx_id=2519&uid=ny&idx_side=-84

You can learn about using Norwegian church records by studying the 'how-to' Links available from this webpage - specifically you should start with
http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~norway/na20.html
http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~norway/articles.html

You can use the Digitalarkivet website freely from any Internet connection -
http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/WebFront.exe?slag=vis&tekst=meldingar&spraak=e
http://www.rootsweb.com/~norway/DigitalArchives.html

You'll also find links to lists of Norwegian words translated into English for you under "Links" above.

Peter A.M. Wilhelmsen should according to the 1865 census have been born 1834 - I did not find him at Fosnæs, but found his wife Elen Pauline born 1827 #56 http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=2507&idx_id=2507&uid=ny&idx_side=-25
Her parents are Peder Pedersen and Ingebor Erichsdatter living at Vemundvighammeren. Elen had been married earlier to Halvor Baardsen, Vedmundvikpl(ass) who was the father of Karen (Helena) listed at the 1865 census - her birht record is # 80 http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=2507&idx_id=2507&uid=ny&idx_side=-144
Peter Andreas and Elen Pauline were married in 1857 #18 http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=2508&idx_id=2508&uid=ny&idx_side=-64
and their son Anton Engelbert was born the same year - #3 http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=2519&idx_id=2519&uid=ny&idx_side=-13
