On Halvor O. Brenden, I very recently found information written by his grandson in 1962. "He (Halvor) was raised by Shur Storraste on a farm (owned in 1962 by Edwarte Elsrud). In 1962 he had old records dating back to a least 1780." The grandson goes on to say "Grandpa was baptized at Hedal Church, but possibly confimed somewhere else (he says Vikers Church). Both churches are near Honefoss on the Spereilen (a river or lake) in Valdres." The grandson's records say "that Halvor Brenden owned the farm where Elsrud now lives and Elsrud had original contract between Halvor ans Shur Storreste." He then says "Grandma Joran (other sp. Jorand or Jorrand) Haugen was born near Hedal June 8, 1849 on a farm that was owned in 1962 by Landsen Haugen". I do know her parents were Ole Knudsen Haugen b. 13 Jun 1813 at Gravlihaugen, Aadal, Buskerud, Norway and Kari Huset (Kari O. Storrustehuset) b. 12 Jan 1812 at Storrustehuset, Sor Aurdal, Oppland, Norway.

From previous postings, would you find this information to be true on Halvor Brenden and is there any possible way to find the land owner ship as I have stated above and maybe a copy of the original contract between Brenden and Storreste that Mr. Elsrud had in 1962? I am hoping these are of public record somewhere. Where is this Spereilen river or lake? Are there any possible photos of these churches? What info can be found on my g-grandmother Joran's family and the farm today? I know this is alot but I am going crazy here with this new found information with many questions and want verification on the information. I welcome any help on this and I thank you in advance.

Hi,
here is an interesting family tree by Eigil Elsrud, starting about 1700 (in Norwegian) about the people living on Gravlihaugen

Your family tree start with Anders Olsen Haugen (1737-1822) son of Ole Olsen Søndre (Southern) Øvrevolden in Redalen (1704-74)and Berit Olsdatter Storruste (1702-64). Anders bought Gravlihaugen April 18. 1778 and married in 1781 Kjersti Ellingsdatter Lysti, Hengsle (1751-1812).

Down page.

Tranlation:
Ole Knutsen Haugen (1813- 1885) married 1841 Kari Olsdatter Storrustehuset (1812-1904).
Ole took over the farm after his father in 1836 and beacame owner for 16 years. He sold the farm Mai 1. 1852 and the contract was set up Mai 26. 1852 to Anders Larsen Hæl.

Already April 26.1852 Ole Knudsen reported emigration to America for himself and his family. They emigrated in company with Christian Hansen Ula and his family.

A story in "The Blade Atlas" Sept.19.1990 act about "Haugen & Ula familes among early settlers"

This is the baptismal record from the Viger church for "Grandma Joran" - Jørand born June 10, baptized June 23 1849. The record is in the Norderhov churchbook. See
#74
On top of the right hand page is Ole Knudsens baptismal record, see here
His parents Knud Olsen and Jørand Andersdatter were then at Gravliejet - ie Gravlihaugen.

Edvard Elsrud (1926-1994) was a forestry-worker and a very popular local writer, and lived at the main Storruste farm in Hedal, Sør-Aurdal, Oppland. Current owner of Nordre Storruste is Edvard's son Lars.

To Eibache
Thank you very much for the Kari O. Storustehuset info. I was questioning the Kari Olsdatter Bymoen because there was nothing there that fit anything I had so was going to ask you about it. This does clear up questions I had on my Kari O. I am aware of 3 siblings of Kari with no informaion on any of them. Are there more siblings? For siblings, I show Knut Olsen b. 1842, Ole Olsen b. 1846 abd Ragnild O b. 1853. Would you also be so kind as to translate for me the information on record, as I saw it, the christening record of Karen, the marrieage of Ole and Ragnild and the first child Agata. I am having a hard time reading it even tho my translations are getting better. If you prefer to do the translations to my email, this would be quite alright manofgrs@hotmail.com. Thanks again for your help and thank you also to Jan Peter and Kaarto. All your help is greatly appreciated. Gene

I gave you wrong information on the siblings of Kari O. Storustehuset. For siblings, I show Knut Olsen b. 1842, Ole Olsen b. 1846 abd Ragnild O b. 1853. These are the children of Kari O. which I have no information. I have no siblings for Kari O. Storustehuset. I apologize for the wrong information. Gene

The birth record for Knud is #16
he was born May 11 and baptized June 12. Ole and Kari lived at "Hougen Gravliejet" - the note says that he was baptized at home by Jørand Hougen.
The birth record for Ole is #20
he was born Febr 5 and baptized June 7. Ole and Kari lived at the same place "Hougen" and Ole was also baptized at home - Catrine Eriksdatter, one of the godparents.
Birth record for Ragnild is not available - they emigrated to US in 1852.

The article about the Haugen & Ula families that you mentioned in an earlier posting, Kare, has to be a reprint of the same article in the "Minnesota Posten" 15 Aug 1975, which I have a copy of. After Eibache's next to his last posting above, I remembered I had the article and reread it. It tells of Ragnhild's birth "under very primitive and adverse conditions". Ragnhild was b. 23 Jun 1853. Thanks again for everyone's continued help. Gene
