Hi : I'm a real newbie for this forum,
I have been searching for months for the family of Ole Christiansen Bonneru(d), from Toten, Norway.... I calculate from his records that I have that he was born 1824, Toten Norway, and died in Ogden, Utah in 1895. All is blank between those two dates.
So, if someone could give me a lead or the dates and place of departure, the arrival dates and place , and the ship's name. I would appreciate it.

Thank you.....Larry

The US censuses would make it seem likely that Ole may have had other family member(s) with him when he emigrated or perhaps family followed soon after (Charles O. Bonnerud???). Perhaps careful study of the census information about them and any other local records where he lived in Utah may give you more information about WHEN they left Norway.
While you search for more details in US records carefully collect names of other family members born in Norway, and all vital dates concerning them, including hints about year of leaving that country.

Hi, have you seen this?

I'm questioning a lot of the information given there... e.g. some of them are born in "Oslo, Toten"...

It looks very strange that these people are registered in Hedmark, Oppland and Oslo.., and that all their children are born in Norway. I can not find these people in census-1865, so I'm wondering if the left before 1865?

Have you found the people in later census'es, and found some clue about the emigration year?

These are some of the people, but it looks very confusing...

Ole Christiansen
Source Hedmark fylke, Nes, Ministerialbok nr. 2 (1813-1827), Fødte og døpte 1824, side 330-331.

Ole Christiansen & Karen Hansdr, Rogneby
Marriage: 08 Oct 1847, Østre Toten, Oppland
Source: Oppland fylke, Østre Toten, Ministerialbok nr. 2 (1840-1847), Ekteviede 1847, side 193.

Helen Marie, born 1850.
Source: Oslo fylke, Oslo Domkirke, Ministerialbok nr. 13 (1844-1864), Fødte og døpte 1850, side 321.

The question would be; is it the same Ole Christiansen & Karen Hansdr who are the parents to all these children? It could be a different couple...

Jan Peter

Jan:

You must have an equal copy to that what I have..... I have all of those children.... They had 10 total .....According to my histories....

Ole is my G.G. grandfather.....on my mother's side.

I know that it appears quite confusing, but he had some of the kids in Norway and the remainder here in the states....It is recorded that my G.Grandfather (Hans Christian, son of Ole) goes into great detail about the death of Dora, a daughter, while they were living in Utah..

According to their history, they (Ole and company) immigrated about 1880?

I am trying to locate more definitne information and get their histoy nailed down.....

If you have anymore information, Jan, I sure could use it.....

It looks like I may have to make a trip to Salt Lake and the FHL to see the records.....

Thank You, Larry

Perhaps they would be listed in the CD sold by the LDS - "Mormon Immigration Index".

I think this is the family in the 1880 US census Click Here and if you click on Previous Household there is a 22 year old O C "Bonbera" who might be Carl Olaf.
The 1900 census lists Han's immigration year as 1876

Thank you very much... I think we hit paydirt!!!! Boy, the names sure change spellng from Norwegian to English.... Eveh with all of the changes, the criteria fits.....

Now all I have to do is to trrack down the immigration ship and go from there... It should be a lot easier to get information.

A million thanks....

If you wouldn't mind, could or would you tell me methods of getting this information because i have some more names that I would like to tackle. However, if not, I understand......

The 1880 census I found them in and the family tree Jan Peter found is on the LDS site Click Here I searched for all norweagians in Utah with the first name of Ole.
The Norwegian census and lots of other information is at the Digitalarkivet If it doesn't display in English there should be a link to click on the left that says English
You just have to be creative when searching. as you said spelling changes and it can also change in the US from census to census.

You ask about methods of getting this information. That is actually very difficult to answer.

First you study. You have to make yourself somewhat familiar with what resources are available for the place and time period you want to research in. When various electronic databases are available you have to learn how to effectively use each of them.

In Norwegian ancestral research make sure you understand the naming system/patterns and that you are prepared for spelling "variations". Collect good lists of translated words for your use and/or a good Norwegian-English dictionary.

Before you try to find people in Norway make sure that you have done a VERY VERY thorough job of collecting all information possible in the new country where they emigrated. Little pieces of information can be important clues - even family stories and legends often contain some grain of truth.

As mentioned above - the CD rom created by the LDS and entitled "Mormon Immigration Index" DOES appear to contain information about the "Bonnerud" family.

Karen Bonerud - age 53 arrive New York 23 Sep 1876
Emma Bonerud - age 11 arrive New York 23 Sep 1876
Olof Bonnerud - age 21 arrive New York 1878
Amalia Bonnerud - age 19 arrive New York 1878

More information should be available on that CD.
