Frederickstad is in Østfold. You can search these exit records for him:

The Frederickstad parish records are also available online, you should be able to find his baptism record:

I am able to find 14 Elias Jonsen/Jonson/Johnsen/Johnson/Johansen/Johanson/Johannessen or Johannesson named in the 1865 Norwegian census. I looked for boys born between 1857 and 1859; given name beginning with letters 'Eli' and ending with 's'; last name beginning with 'Jo' and containing the letter 'n'.
None of those 14 boys list a birthplace of Fredrikstad and none show parents with names like those you list above.

Try using the 'advanced search' option of the NHDC Norwegian census databases - you can alter the search criteria in any manner you choose and continue the search. (Important tip: the database WILDCARD is % and the instructions are offered are well worth your time to study.)

There does appear an older married couple using the names John and Catherine Nicolaysen - but they appear too old to have had a son about 1858 -

I also could not find any thing for Elias in the 1865 census. It is interesting that Catherine Nicolaysen was born in Fredrikstad.

As far as locating his emigration date, when was he married?

Did he became a naturalized citizen?

Jo Anne brings up a good point. We've seen others from Australia who have found very helpful information on Australian naturalization documents, those should be searched for by 'Conwill'.

'Conwill' - in another thread you were looking at a record for an Elias Johnson of an entirely different age category than mentioned above. How certain of his age are you?

It would be of interest to know where you got the info that Elias was born in Fredrikstad - and the approximate year - the names of his parents are typically swedish - Fredrikstad is close to the Swedish border - maybe he was born in Sweden and the parents moved to Fredrikstad?

Now that Hopkins have found Elias in the 1865 census for Narverød farm in Sem parish, Vestfold county:
http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=1&filnamn=f60721&gardpostnr=695&personpostnr=4438#nedre
it is evident that Elias was born in Sweden - not Fredrikstad - and that the year of birth was 1838 - not 1858 - it is quite clear that the parish records of birth from Fredrikstad will be of no help.
May I also suggest that futher discussions are concentrated on this thread - not this one http://www.norwayheritage.com/snitz/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=3319.
Have not been able to find a record of when Elias moved to the Sem parish - such a record could indicate where he came from in Sweden.

Regarding birth date on elias"s marriage certificate in 1884 it says he was 28.
