There are/were farms called Smestuen (and spelling variations on that) in at least 6 major areas of Norway (and many smaller districts within those major areas). What are the names of the family members who came from Smestuen, when were they born, when did they leave Norway? |

I only notice ONE head of household named Smestuen in US censuses who lists a birthplace of Norway. Ole Smestuen in Dunn Co. WIS, 1910. Lists himself as 27 yrs old and gives immigration year as 1902. This Ole Smestuen is also in the WorldConnect databases on Rootsweb as Ole O. Smestuen, Birth: 27 Dec 1882 in Norway , Immigration: 1902, Death: Feb 1975 in Wheeler, Dunn County, Wisconsin.
Is this the Smestuen family being sought? |

Yes, Ole Smestuen is my grandfather and he lived in Dunn County Wisconsin USA. I am not sure which of his brothers or sisters came to the USA with him or separately. I believe that Ingeborg, Anders, Albert and Martin might have been here too. I am interested in how he arrived here....his route and the ship he may have been on. Thanks for the help!

There are articles and other help on this site on ships, routes, etc. Look at the Index of Departures and Arrivals to see where/how Norwegian Immigrants were getting to North America at that time.
For $27. you can get a copy of Ole's Social Security Application, it would have ALOT of information including his place of birth and parents names. You can access this on the free Rootsweb.com database and print out a form letter.
He is in Dunn County in the 1920 and 1930 census, all indicate immigration year as 1902. Amanda went by Manda.
On September 11, 1918 he registered for the World War I draft, his application states his name is Ole Olson Smestuen, born December 27, 1892, not naturalized, wife Manda, short, slight build, blue eyes, light hair, farmer.

Ole Olsen Smeatuen, was naturalized in Dunn County, Wisconsin on July 30, 1941, #971.

You can obtain a copy of his naturalization papers and it will include a wealth of information including his picture, ship he can on, place of birth, etc. |

The farm was likely named Smedstuen: Smiths stove/cabin, the recidence of a smith or black smith. The letter d when you pronounce Smedstuen in Norwegian is "dumb", Smestuen is the verbal pronunciation..

Most all of the 'Smestuen' farms were from the area closer to Oslo - rather than north around Trondheim. No 'Smestuen' farm in Holtålen Sør-Trøndelag.
BUT the 1900 Norwegian census for Holtålen shows a man who is identified as Ole Johnsen Smedstuen, from Gudbrandsdalen Krs (Oppland) and he lists children by the names of John, Ole, Anders, Ingebr... etc. The son Ole listed with birth year of 1882. 1900 on Flootberg farm
John, you appear to have more information about the family that you haven't shared - so perhaps you can match one or two of these listed siblings.
Well done Kåre. I never thought to check Trondheim emigration protocol after seeing where the vast majority of farms with that name were located. |

I think Ole Smedstuen who emigrated via Trondheim 1902 was your grandfather. He must the same Ole Smestuen Hopkins pointed out above. Ole Olsen Smedstuen born Des. 27. 1882 in Holtåsaen municipality, nr 2. His father Ole Johnsen Smedstuen born 1855 was working at the railroad and his mother Maret Olsdatter born 1857 was from farm Prestrønning http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=6512&idx_id=6512&uid=ny&idx_side=-19

This is most likely Marit Olsdatter´s father, only church records can give the final evidence. Widower Ole Olsen Prestrønning born 1826 living as "Føderaadsmand" on farm Prestrønning. He was earlier owner of Prestrønning and when he handed over the farm to his son Peder Olsen Præstrønning he set up a contract which gave him free food and a room (Føderaad) for the rest of his life. http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=11&filnamn=f01645&gardpostnr=49&merk=49#ovre
