I am new to this forum so please excuse and ignorance about Norway.
My ancestor Gustav Tonning was naturalised in Adelaide, South Australia 27 June 1898, he had been in Australia 18 months at this time. He was 23 in 1897 when he married, so would have been born about 1874. His occupation was given as Mariner. His father's name was Ludwig. And Gustav was from Poragrund.
I am trying to find any information about him or his family.
Thanking you in anticipation. |

Hi, First off, I'm assuming that the place that you are referring to is Porsgrund, Telemark, Norway. I may be wrong and others may have a different opinion. Here is a link to everyone from the 1865 Norway census, for Telemark, whose given name started with "lu", in hopes that one of them may sound familiar. I was hoping that we might find Ludvig, since there are only 6 listed.
I'm removing the link I had posted, because it didn't work.
Good luck, Wanda |

There is nothing better than doing Norwegian research, there is so much available free online.
I recommend you go to the links section here and start reading articles on beginning Norwegian research. You have to start with yourself and work backwards. Get a good family tree program and complete family group sheets and properly document everyone. Find out everything about his siblings and see if they stayed in Norway. |

You will find the record for Ludvig Kristopher as #74 here http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=2259&idx_id=2259&uid=ny&idx_side=-51 - nice handwriting, difficult to read? His father was a Kjøbmand (merchant) in Aalesund (city today - Ålesund) by the name Ole M. Toning and mother Kornelia Flor, født (born) Das. Godparents were Distrikslege (regional physician) Lordsen, Kjøbmd (merchant) N. Dewold, Fru (misses) Hagen, Mdme (madame) Hegge og (and) Jfr (maiden) Tomrun Norberg, samt (as well as) Sundkersesmd (ferryman?) Das. Good luck with your search! |

Thanks for help received so far - you are very kind. I am getting confused with the last names, though. I understand that Ludvig Christopher Olsen is the same person as Ludvig Christopher Tonning and the Olsen is because he is the son of Ole (Martin Tonning) but which name do you look people up under? |
