I would appreciate link(s) to lists of Norwegian farm names, ideally with the ability to find directions in current-day Norway. Specifically, I wish to track down farms in the Norddalen prætgjeld of Møre og Romsdal.

My g-grandfather (Johan Olsen) was born on Gjerde, although his family later lived on Grønningsæter. My g-grandmother (Oline Christiansdtr) was from Engeset.

My wife and I will be in Norway next month -- equipped with a rental car -- and I would very much like to find and photograph these sites.

From experience, I know how helpful this website has been...so thanks in advance.

Hi,
what city will you be flying to?

I think you are very lucky in terms of where your ancestors came from!
Rauma, Norddal and Stranda (Geiranger) are among the most scenic municipalities in Norway, so bring a lot of film rolls! Or memory cards in this digital world...

And while you're there, you need of course to continue on road 63 southwards down to the city of Geiranger. And once you're there you have to take one of those daycruises on the world famous Geirangerfjord, e.g. this one. Peak season in the area ends late August.

The city of Geiranger, with international cruise ships waiting for the busy harbour to become available:

Pictured from the other side:

The road between Geiranger and Åndalsnes (rd 63) is possibly the greatest road in Norway, including the famous Trollstigen, which is between Grønningsæter and Kavli.

The route (Åndalsnes - Trollstigen - Valldal - Eidsdal - Ørnevegen - Geiranger - Dalsnibba - Grotli) is called The Golden Route, and are among the biggest tourist attractions in Norway. See also National Tourist Routes.

A picture of the Trollstigen which you'll have to drive to get from Grønningsæter to Kavli:

This is a great site to plan your journey, type in the city or farmname, and possibly the municipality, like this:

Geiranger Stranda
Engeset Norddal
Gjerde Norddal
Grønningsæter Norddal
Åndalsnes Rauma
Kavli Rauma

The driving distance between Geiranger and Åndalsnes is about 90 km, or 1.5 hrs.
To cross the Norddalsfjorden between Engeset and Gjerde, you'll have to take the ferry from Eidsdal to Linge. (Ferry every 20/30 minute during the summer.)

Jan Peter, your efforts on our behalf are extraordinary! We'll follow every detail of your suggestions. (And I will prepare myself for some challenging driving!)

Since these farm names were sometimes repeated in other fylke, are you referring to Møre og Romsdal? Could you say the approximate time period?

Perhaps we should share some findings.
