Hei All,
I need some help with mapping two farms in the Mykland, Aust Agder area. I am going to Norway at the end of the month and am planning on staying in Arendal for part of my trip. From there, I'd like to visit or at least see where the Lardahl and Øustad/Auestad farms are located.
I've been using www.finn.no and can find the Mykland area, but not many of the farm names are listed. Can anyone help me with this?

Normally this map
will be helpful.
In some cases you will have to choose (velg) between hits. You may also establish a driving route if you will be going by car. |

Takk for hjelpen med Norway finn! We will have a car and plan on visiting the Mykland/Åmli area, Søndeled, Tvedestrand, Risør and Tromøy, to see the tombstone for my Great great grandfather, Greger Olsen. We are also spending a few days in Hjartdal, Telemark and have many family farms to visit there. I have maps of those farms from another map service, plus we plan on meeting Kåre there and we're sure that he'll be the best possible tour guide for that area. :)
I've gotten in touch with a very distant relative and will be meeting them in Oslo. It's all very exciting.
This mapping site that you listed is wonderful. I can see Belland also, and think that the farm that was thought to be Lardahl might actually be
Lauvskard or Lauvrak. I'll have to go back and look at the parish records for Knut Andersen.

Fyi...,
the Mykland area has this week been hit by the biggest forest fire in Norway ever.
Some 10000 acres of forest have burned down so far in the fire which started on Monday this week. It has still not been put out.
The roads in the area have been closed, and they are currently using 14 helicopters to fight the fire. The smoke from the fire has caused false alarms and fire-brigade turnouts as far south as in Denmark!
As far as I know, no farms or houses have burned down so far, but many cottages are lost.

I have been reading the Aftenposten daily, since I first heard about it from Kåre. It looks just awful and I hope they get some rain soon. I feel so badly for those people who live in the Mykland and Froland area. It's ironic that I'm leaving the flooded Midwest to go to an area that is desperate for rain. We have roads that have washed away or are closed, because of high water.
We will still be going to the Arendal area, but will wait and see what happens in that area and make our plans accordingly. I hope the fires end soon and that no one is hurt! That's the important thing!

Hi All,
I went to Auestad and met a relative. Now I am just trying to figure out how we are related. I know that we are, because he is from the original family and I think we share a great great great grandfather, but I'm not sure. Could someone please read this parish record and tell me what it says? I can make out the first part, but the second part is blurry? At the bottom of the page, the marriage of Terjes Aslaksen of Øuested and Ashier Hansdtr on October 7, 1810. Thanks for your help! By the way, the forest fire was stopped just 10 minutes from Auestad. We drove through the area where the forest fires were and it still smelled like it was burning.

Hei Wanda and thank you for two wonderful days Ruth and I spend wity you and your family on July 3. and 4. in Hjartdal in Telemark.
The Åmli record:
Bachelor Terje Aslaksen Øyestad and maid Asier Hansdatter Tvedt.
Cautionister/Witness: A. T. Møkland and Niels Halvorsen Rostvedt ?.
A.T. Møkland was farmer Aslak Torgiusen age 46 on Økland in 1801 census for Åmli.

That makes more sense than what I had figured out. So, his father is Aslak Torguisen. That helps a lot. Now to figure out the children of each and I'm sure to find the connection with the current owner of Auestad.
Kåre, We had a wonderful time with you and Ruth. You were the best company, interpretor and tour guide, we could of asked for. We hope to do it again soon. It was nice to find someone as "crazy" about looking for cemeteries and family farms as I am. :) If anyone gets the chance to go to the Hjartdal/Sauland/Tuddal area, it is beautiful and I highly recommend staying at the Hoyfjellshotel in Tuddal, near the top of Gaustatoppen. That's the highest mountain in Norway. The views were wonderful.

I am very interested in this past post of Kari Terjesdr/Terjesdotter & Jonas Sorenson. I had most of the information in the posts, but wondering if anyone had found anymore on Kari's death. Kari & Jonas were my 4th great grandparents. Jonas and Kari had 4 children, 1 passing. I have looked for Anders/Andrew Knutson's sister, Gunhild Knudson, with some possibilities. Jonas remarried in Winnebago County, Wisconsin in 1851 to another Kari.
Love to converse on these family lines.
