I am have great difficulty in finding Serine Torisdatter Sandvold anywhere in USA. I have searched LDS, Ancestry.com, as well as many others,Census, Marriage, Death records, for Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin. I have checked various spellings and I'm getting nowhere.
Her brother Ole Tornelius Sandvold came back from Story Co, Iowa in 1905 to get his sister Serine. They traveled via Stjerne ship from Bergen on 1/Apr/ 1905.( I have the Digitalarkivet for the emmigration). I assumed that she came back to Story County , Iowa with her brother. I can not find her on the 1910 census but she very well could have married in that time period. I suppose there is the possibility that she may have died on the voyage. Are there any records of deaths on ship?
I could use some directions as to where I search from here.
Serine was born 17/Mar/1886. Serine came from Skaanevik, Holmedal, Hordaland
Thank you.
Jean

In the Ellis Island records, there is a Serina Sandval arriving there on 17 Apr 1905 on what looks the SS Hedric or Cedric....when I looked at the enlarged version, it looked like Sandvold to me, and it looks like there is an Olai Sandwold 2 above her name age 27. Was there a Lana (Lena?) Sandvold too? Because there is one right below Serina's name and she's age 17. They are both going to Iowa with Olai, who is a US Citizen. If you want to look at it, just put in ser (first name) and sand (last name) under the advanced search.

Hi Jean In the Story County birth records there is a Anna Sandvold married to Richard R Richardson listed as the mother of 5 children. (I am assuming Richard is her husband since he is named as the father ) Click Here I searched using sand. I think it would be likely that Serina would use an Americanized Anna as a first name.

Well maybe not. I should have looked at the dates and the first child was born 1903 plus the 1910 census lists her as 35 immigrated in 1892

There was a Lisbeth Oline Nilsdtr Sandvold that left with them on the same date, so she's not their sister, but she is going to the same place as Ole and Serine.

Just a small correction - Serine was born May 17 and christened May 30 according to the scanned parish record see #4 lower part of record.
The record states Bager (baker) Tørris Olsen og (and) hustru (wife) Margrete Torbjørnsdtr. (Torbjørnsdatter) as her parents.
Torris was born 1845 and Margrete 1853, they lived at Sandvold when Serine was born.
Godfathers were farmer Nils Olsen Sandvold, bachelor Torbjørn Nilsen Sandvold, married woman Ingeborg Haakonsdatter, maiden Aase Torbjørnsdatter Handeland, maiden Gjøri Olsdatter Sandvold.

Thank you for the information. Serine did have a sister named Anna but I don't think the one mentioned is correct. The Ellis Island Ship Manifest is the right one. Even though the names are spelled incorrectly. All the Holensdal are suppose to be Holmedal. My grandfather Ole married a Marie Holmedal and Johanna Holmedal traveling with her children is Marie's sister as is Ingeborg Holmedal. The one listed as Alan would be Ole, Serine's brother. I'm not sure about Lena, Im thinking this must be Lisabeth Oline Nilssdatter Sandvold. I think she is a cousin of Ole and Serine but I have not verified this yet.
Thank you for the correction on Serine's birthdate from Mar to May. Although I have a copy of the birth record it is hard to tell if it is Mar or May. Your eyesight is much better than mine.
I can't believe I missed this Ship Manifest at Ellis Island as I looked for days at this sight. So thank you very much!
I'm still stuck finding Serine in Iowa or USA so far but at least I know for sure she got here. Back to Searching.

I believe that you have the info on Tørris Olsens birth, but just in case you need the parish record he is #85 - you can blow it up to 150%.
Margrete was actually christened Margarethe, see #147 - her parents were Thorbjørn Johannessen and Anne Ørjansdatter living at the Handeland farm.

I'm sorry, I didn't mean for you to go back into records that we already worked on. I was just wondering if Serine made it to America for sure and now I know for sure based on the record from Ellis Island that I somehow missed. The reason I was wondering is that I can find no trace of here in USA.
Thanks, as always for your help

Jean,
Don't be surprised if a Norwegian woman named "Serine" might have become a Sarah or similar in the US. They typically stayed with the same first letter of the original name and many times opted for a more traditional American name which "sounds like" -- IF you are lucky. Trying to track females through American records is almost always difficult - the sad habit of changing surnames when they married is a major contributor to that difficulty.
