Pauline Petersen Birth: Oct 1873, New Hope, Portage, Wi Death: Aft 1936 Parents: Peter Gunderson & Guri
Ole Peder Engum = Peder D. Engum in the records
His parents are Johan Amundsen & Ane Halvorsdatter from Østre Gausdal in Oppland.
The 1801 census have one farm Mælum, see here. The couple on the farm is Christen Jaensen and Kari Gundersdatter and their daughter Anne 4 years old. Anne Mehlum 78 years in 1880 should have been born 1802 by this couple then. The parish record shows that they christened a daughter Martha Aug 22 that year, see #26
A large percentage of the Norwegian's that settled in New Hope township and nearby Alban township were from Gausdal. Many of them were related, so one came over and then you see siblings or nephews settling nearby.
In "From The Indian Land" it states, "Johan A. Engum, from Gausdal, born February 2, 1826, and wife Anne, from Gausdal, born October 14, 1831. Their children were Johannes, Carl, and Peder, born in New Hope." There is also a Lars H. Engum that settled in New Hope.
They are listed as early settlers of New Hope. "Johan Enjom (Engom) and wife Anne Enjom, together with Lars Enjom, a bachelor, all from Gausdal."
There is a picture of a group of people with a threshing machine and one of the people listed in the picture is Albert Engun. I'm not sure if he is part of that family or not.
The link I gave above indicates that Anne Mehlum = Anne Larsdatter, and that she is born in Østre Gausdal on 20 Jan 1811 by parents Lars Olsen & Guri Paulsdr

I think I have a hint as to when they came to the US.
From the same book. "Lars Halverson, bachelor, to U.S. June 30, 1857, from Gausdal, born April 1, 1835." "Anne Larsdatter, a widow, to U.S. June 30, 1857, from Gausdal, born January 15, 1911. (As both Lars Halvorson and Anne Larsdatter came on the same ship, there is reason to believe that Lars was her son). "
If you look at what I wrote before, you will notice that Lars is listed as Lars H. Engum.
It lists Johanne Engom in the index, but I can't find her in the book. I'll keep looking.
Here they are leaving Norway, from the Gausdal parish records.
Anne Larsdatter #160, Lars Halvorsen #161 and I beleive this is Johannes, Anne and their children # 168 - 172. If someone could please look at this and see if I'm correct and translate, I'd really appreciate it. http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:NBN:no-a1450-kb20070201620197.jpg
You're right, that is the correct people. Strange that Anne Larsdr's husband died the year after...?
160 Anne Larsdatter (46) 161 Lars Halvorsen Mælum (22) 168 Johan Olsen Frøseeie (31) 169 Anne Halvorsdater (26) 170 Anton (7) 171 Hans (5) 172 Johanne (2)
Jan Peter, Thanks! I thought the same thing, but he was 72 when he died in 1858 and she would of only been 47. He may not have wanted to make the trip at that age and she didn't want to be left there alone, after he died. I haven't seen that she remarried after arriving in Wisconsin.
I haven't found the ship that they came over on, but it probably arrived in Quebec, which makes it harder to find them. There are a few different ships listed on this site that arrived at the end of June 1857, but no ship's lists.
