I can not thankyou all enough! Yes the family is Johan and Anne engum.
Now do I unserstand the naming correct tha Amund Olsen son Johan Amundsen the middle name Amundsen simply means that Hohan is Amund's son? and the that the family name is Engum or that is the farm name!
Is "From The Indian Land" a book? where could I purchase it!
This is so exciting. How can I go and update some information. My grandfather Lenroot was married 3 times I have the complete information from the 2nd and 3rd wife.
Thanks Denise

Hi Denise,

My family settled in New Hope and Alban townships and I grew up in that area, though I don't live there now. Part of my family is also from Gausdal, so we could be related. :) You never know! I know that I'm related to Melum's in New Hope.

I currently have the "From The Indian Land" by Malcolm Rosholt through the library by interlibrary loan. I've been told that you can purchase it through the Iola Historical Society for $30 (?).

Part of the information that's in the book can be found at http://www.mainstreet-marketplace.com/Indianland.htm
I haven't checked yet to see if your family is in there, but I bet they are mentioned in the New Hope section. Do you have the plat book information on your family? I can check and see what's availabe and let you know.

Happy searching, Wanda

Yes,
Johan Amundsen Engum was named Amundsen because he was the son of Amund.
Likewise, his wife Anne was named Halvorsdatter because she was the daughter of Halvor...

Amund Olsen (16) is a servant at the Frøsen farm in Gausdal in census-1801.
The Engum name must come from that farm. There was a small holding named Frøsenengum under the main Frøsen farm, and Amund Olsen probably settled a family there.

The main farm today is called Frøyse Øvre.
The Engum farm looks to be gone, but there is a road called Engjomsvegen there!
In case you wanna visit the area, the address to where the Engum farm was located would be Engjomsvegen 82a, 2652 Svingvoll in Gausdal, Oppland.

Denise,

Is the Lenroot that you mentioned, L.H. Engum? I see him owning 60 acres on County MM, near Sunset Lake, in the 1895 Plat Book.

I don't see him in the 1915 Plat Book, but I do see that Albert Engum has 160 acres on County A, near Hwy 161. Albert isn't listed in the 1895 Plat Book for New Hope that I can see. He may have been renting and then bought G.O. Wemme's land when he died or he sold it.

If you're interested in having these plat maps, click on Lislcat on the left and that will take you to my profile. Send me an e-mail from there, so I have your e-mail address and then I can send you PDF's of the maps.

Good luck! Wanda

No that would not be my grandfather. Lenroot Oviatt Pomeroy Engum was born in 1906. It must of been cousin or brother of Johan
thanks Denise

I suppose L.H. Engum would be Ole Peder Engum's uncle, Lars Halvorsen Engum (1835-1902)

Denise,

You may already know this, but quite a few of them are buried at North New Hope Cemetery. I'll send you the layout for the cemetery. Also, I saw on the layout that Lars H. Engun is listed as being a Civil War Veteran, so maybe someone can help with finding information about that. I didn't find him listed on the roster of soldiers on the Wisconsin Historical Society site, but maybe someone familiar with doing this kind of research can help.

Denise,

At Vesterheim's site, I found this on Lars H. Engum.

ENGUM, Lars

From Gudbrandsdalen, Norway. Civil War: Private. Post war: Died in New Hope, Wisconsin. (before 1907). Sources: (Ulvestad p278)

Not much, but maybe there is more. I thought I might be able to find out what regiment he was in.

Wanda
