Is there a Finstuen village in Norway? My great grandfather Peter Ole Finstuen may have been from there. Looking for any possible information on Finstuen.
In the 1900 cencus there are 37 FARMS called Finstuen. He or his parents most likely have a connection to one of them. But I'm afraid we'll have to know a little more - like (approximately) when he is born and/or (approximately) when he emmigrated to find the right farm.
Ole Peter Finstuen and Agnet Finstuen are Peter Ole's mother and father. Agnet was born in 1817. Ole died in 1905(?) in Minnesota. I will go to the cemetery to find the year he was born. Agnet and Ole emigrated from Norway in 1868. I guess Peter Ole was actually born in Minnesota after Ole and Agnet came from Norway in 1868. Unfortunately I have limited information but hope to find more. The church records of Lands Lutheran Church in Zumbrota, Minnesota which would have contained Ole and Agnet were lost to fire in the late 1800's.
It looks like the mother, a widow in her 50th year (49 years old) having sold her farm and bought herself support etc on e nearby farm, probalbly by relatives.
This is in Søndre land in Oppland. I'm not familiar with this district. If you start a debate in user-forum at Digitalarkivet someone surely could tell you wether there is a "bygdebok" from the district. Maybe someone is known there and could tell something about the Finstuen farm - and if I'm right or wrong about your people.
Her name would have been Agnethe Aspugard (B 1817), she married Peder J. Finstuen. Their surname could have been Pedersen (spelling?) in Norway. Agnethe came to USA but I believe Peder J. passed in Norway prior to 1868. Ole Peter Finstuen (B 1843) therefore would have been their son. He married a Anne (B 1842, daughter of a ?Foraulid Ole?) They would have had a son named Peter Ole Finstuen. Thanks for your help:) John
I have some new information on the people I am looking for which differs from what I stated in my last posts. The National American Heritage Association was helpful in obtaining more accuracy in what I am looking for. Agnethe Pedersdatter was her name. She was born in 1817 in Norway. Her husband was Peder Olsen Finstuen who died in Norway in 1851. The two of them had four children: Johann Finstuen, Randine Finstuen, Ole P. Finstuen, born 1842 who married Annie Jorunlid born in 1843, and Peter P. Finstuen born 7 Nov 1846. Emigration for Agnethe and her children to America is believed to have been in 1868. They were from Lands, Norway from a farm called Finstuggu (Finstuen) which was a subdivison of a larger farm called Fossum in Torpa Parish. If anyone would know anything of these people, it would be great to hear from you.
I am guessing that this is the Johan Finstuen that you mention in your post.
Johan Pedersen Finstuen in the U.S., Find A Grave Index, 1600s-Current Name: Johan Pedersen Finstuen Gender: M (Male) Birth Date: 6 Jan 1836 Death Date: 27 Mar 1911 Death Place: Goodhue County, Minnesota, United States of America Cemetery: Pine Island Cemetery Burial or Cremation Place: Pine Island, Goodhue County, Minnesota, United States of America Has Bio?: N Spouse: Pernille Finstuen Children: Hans Andrew Finstuen
By the 1865 Norwegian Census Johan was already married with one child.
This would be the record for the marriage of Johan Pedersen and Pernille Hansdatter
Johan Pedersen in the Norway, Select Marriages, 1660-1926 Name: Johan Pedersen Gender: Male Age: 26 Birth Date: 1837 Marriage Date: 26 des 1863 (26 Dec 1863) Marriage Place: Nordre Land,Opland,Norway Father: Peder Jensen Spouse: Pernille Hansdr FHL Film Number: 307308
I see that in the birth record for Johan in 1837 that the farm name associated with Peder Jensen and Agnethe Hansdatter is Bratlien.
And in the marriage record for Peder Jensen and Agnethe Olsdatter in 1836 the farm name associated with Peder is Bratlien. Also his father is named Peder Jensen.
On the farm Bratlien in the 1801 Census are living a Jens Pedersen born about 1770 and his son Peder Jensen born about 1797. Likely the father and the grandfather of Johan Pedersen Finstuen.
