I am in need of some help in figuring out the writing on a birth record. I am searching my great grandfather and found him in the birth records from Skoger from 1875- I have found him on page 37 Nicolai born March 28,1875. I need help in translating his parents names and god parents. I cannot make out his fathers 1st name, but I get Jonas Hansen,Egholt.
Thanks for any help |

Hi, his fathers first name was a bit hard to read, it looks like Joakim, Joakim Jonas Hansen Egholt. His mother was Andrine Knudsdatter. Godparents: Ungkarl (Bachelor) Thorvald Andreasen, Ungkarl Andreas Olsen, Kona (Wife) Karen Anreasdatter, Pige (Maid) Ovidia Olsdatter.
Here is Nicolai´s confirmation record, Skoger Oct. 6. 1889, for a better look on his fathers first name, Nicolai Jonasen farm Bakken u. Egholt, father Joakim? J. Hansen (Still a bit hard to understand) #18 His father´s wedding- or birth records could pehaps sort it out if he was was born or married Andrine Knudsdatter in Skoger.

Hi, in LDS, Jonas Hansen & Andrine Knudsdatter can be found with the following children:
Hans, christ 02 MAY 1858, Skoger, Vestfold Martine Josephine, christ 01 APR 1860, Skoger, Vestfold Martinius, christ 1862, Skoger, Vestfold Julius, christ 16 AUG 1863, Skoger, Vestfold Maren, christ 18 MAR 1866, Skoger, Vestfold Hans, christ 1868 Skoger, Vestfold Hanna Marie, christ 19 SEP 1869, Skoger, Vestfold Otto, christ 25 AUG 1872 Skoger, Vestfold Nicolai, christ 27 JUN 1875 Skoger, Vestfold
And "Joakim" is not a part of his name. It actually says "Jordeier", and is his "profession"; meaning Landowner.

That make sence, it confused me since Nicolai´s last name was Jonasen, traditional named after his fathers first name.
Nicolai Jonassen emigrated from Skauger 1903 on ship Angelo, dest. Quebec. He traveled by oneself but was married, his profession was Murer-Brick layer Click here
Skauger or Skoger, local pronunciaton Skauer, was earlier local parish in Sande main parish and municipality in Vestfold conty until 1732, placed in Buskerud, and the church records are listed in Buskerud.
Buskerud county, Skoger is south of Drammen town in Buskerud county next to the border of Vestfold county (not visible) Map 1901: Skoger was a part of Drammen main parish and municipality, and the family lived now in Drammen, Rebbansbakken 92, first floor. Bakken means hill or slope
Nicolai Jonassen and his family. He likely married in Modum in Buskerud, because his wife Mina like his oldest son Karl Gustav was both born there, his daughter Asta Josepha ans his son Thorleif Gabriel was born in Drammen Click her
Nicolai was christeded in Skoger old church but his confirmation took place in the new church inaugurated 1885 Click here

I am giddy like a school girl! Thank you so much for all that info. IT is much more than I ever hoped to find. I am working on the family history for a family reunion-we go by the name Hanson now and it will 100 years since g-granfather Nic came to Canada. My grandfather is his son Karl Gustav. This is amazing-thank you all ! |

5 years after Nicolai emigrated his wife Mina Caroline Jonassen and four children was send for and Oct. 30. 1908 they emigrated to Winnipeg in Canada on ship Oslo. Her profession was in parenthecis since the clerk for sure was unsure (murer-brick layer) Cause: Til sin mand- To her husband Click here
Mina Caroline Gulbrandsen and Nicolai Jonassen Egholt, living on farm Bakken in Skoger, maried in Heggen church in Modum nov. 3. 1895. Fathers: Gulbrand Markussen Strand (a bit uncertain about his last name) and Jonas Hansen Bakken #21
Heggen church where both Ninas christening, confirmation and wedding was taken place. You will find her birth day in the emigration record and also her mothers name in the church records, she was confirmed about 15-16 years old if you want to look for yourself, ask for help if anything is uncertain.
It must be a lot of descendants from Mina and Nicolai in Canada today?

Hi, 1865 census for Skoger in Strĝmsĝ/Strĝmsgodset parish in Vestfold, present Drammen, to find out when and where Jonas Hansen and Andrine Hansdr was born.

I cannot say Thank You enough !. The information you have given me is unbelieveable. I did have the info on the emigration & had found the wedding banns of Nic & Mina, but you have given me so much more. I now have tons to sort out &write about before the reunion. This will shock the family no doubt. The family is about 120+ now. Nic & Mina had the 4. Karl-my grandpa had 10 kids, his sister Asta had 3 ,Thorlief was a bachelor(I remember him as being very cranky !) and Norman had 1 child. The 10 kids of course went on to all have their own-ranging from 3 to 5 each-and the list goes on. Our reunion I know will be fun and even better now. Again I thank you for everything,if I am in need again I know who to come to for help. If anyone out there needs help in look ups on Canadian Census, especially in Saskatchewan let me know. Diane |

Hi, a small correction: Tangen was also a local parish next to Skoger, so that Knud Knudsen worked on the ship yard might for that reason be a wrong conclusion, but he worked " paa Tangen" in Tangen when his daughter Andrine was born. Skoger is coming from Skog mean forest.
Dalsland in Sweden
Egholt is coming from Eg/Ek /Eik which means Oak. Egholt, an area covered with oak.
Bakken means hillside/sloap.
Strand means beach/waterside , and was placed by the river Simoa in Modum.
Modum in Buskerud
Your g-grandfather Karl Gustav was born April 11 and christened July 7. 1895 in Heggen church in Modum. His father´s last name is wrongspelled as Nicolai Johnsen (Jonasen) Ekholdt. Konnerudvĉrket. Mother Mina Karoline Gulbrandsdatter Strandeie. Godparents: Kone (Wife) Kristine Pedersdtr Jelstad, Pige (Maid) Thora Hansdtr Nymoen, Gb "Gaardbruker" Farmer Magnus Kristiansen Jelstad, Forpagter (Leaseholder) Gulbrand Markussen Strandeie (his grandfather), Jĝrgen Johansen Strandeie #46
Nicolai Jonasen worked on Konnerud, a ridge between Skoger and Drammen, likely as a brick layer at the silver, lead and copper mining company Konnerudverket
Stċle Ekholt, DIS-Norge is listed on farm Egholt in Skoger, he might help you with more information about Egholt
Good luck with the famliy reunion.

Thank you once again-- I do have 1 question for you though-- on the copy of the 1865 census its shows Jons & wife & 2 children-but those kids were 4 5th born-- where do you think the 1st 2 or 3 would have been? Was the census done on who was actually there at the time and not the complete family-or could they have fostered the 1st kids ? |

Hi. Good question. Frankly I don´t know. There are no Hans, Martine Josefine or Martinius Jonasen listed in Skoger in the 1865 census, so why, if the clerk just forgot them, or the reason for it will probaly never be known. Not all farms was visited.
Perhaps Stċle Ekholt from DIS-Norge can help you, he has likely access to "Bygdebooks" from Skoger.

Most questions can be answered - the three oldest children are not in the 1865 census because, Martinius died in 1862, see #42 Hans died in 1864 see #15 and so did Martine Josefine, see #85 |

Einar, that mace sence, I thought the LDS list abowe showed the whole family gathered. So for that reason the 1865 census is correct. I thought pehaps we had a simular situation as in Sauherad in Telemark 1801 census and priest Emmanuel Grave, he was so lazy even his neighbours wasn´t visited.
