I'm looking for tips on where in Norway my Bracken and Listerude ancestors are from. My great-great grandfather, Peter H. Listerude, arrived in the US in 1868 at age 5. My other great-great grandfather, Peter K. Bracken, arrived in the US in 1885 at age 21.

There is a Listerud farm in Vestre Toten, Oppland, Norway. The 1865 Norwegian census shows a young boy living there who later could have been identified as "Peter H. Listerude".

And perhaps the same family sailing from Oslo/Kristiania in 1869 with stated destination of LaCrosse.

Sometimes you has to start from zero, and it might be a blind track, but
Bracken could perhaps be changed from Brekke.

1900 there were about 100 farms named Brekke in Norway according "Norske Gaardnavne".

I would have started with Peter K. Brekke.
K. is most likely the first letter in his fathers given name.

I was also considering any combination of persons like Pe... (K... or C...) Brĉk....
(I like to think in "starts with" combinations.)

I did find the man in the 1900 US census listed as Peter Brecken or Breckan (the handwriting is less than easy) residing in Minneapolis, Minn. No help from his occupation - day laborer. Is listed as born in either Jan or Jun of 1863.

Peter K. Bracken is listed in the online Minnesota Death Certificate index (certid# 1940-MN-020640). He died 11 June 1940 in Hennepin County.
Has his detailed death certificate been examined?

I've had success with other persons by consulting those documents.
Below is an excerpt of the Minnesota Death Index webpage:
Information about the person may include: first name, last name, middle name, age, sex, race, date of birth, place of birth (state or country), marital status (including number of children), spouse’s name, occupation, father’s name and birth place, mother’s name and birth place, and signature and address of person providing information about the deceased.

Information about the death may include: date of death, primary cause of death, contributing cause of death, duration of the primary and contributing causes of death, signature and address of the physician, former residence if death occurred away from home, place of death, place of burial, date of burial, signature and address of undertaker, date when the certificate was filed, and signature of the local registrar.

If the death certificate does not give more early information about him and/or his parentage then perhaps an obituary might; or records at the church he attended while a resident of Minneapolis.
