I am trying to find some information about Norwegian immigrants Johannes JOHANSEN HOLT a.k.a. John J. HOLT (02 Jan 1850 - 1944) & his wife, Martine HANSDATTER BARSTAD (08 Apr 1850 - 1928) and their descendants.

An article on this family can be found here:
http://www.wisconsinhistory.org/wmh/pdf/winter_03_zeidel.pdf

HOLT's parents were Johannes JOHANSEN HOLT and Sedsel OLSDATTER from Grue, Hedmark, Norway, who emigrated to New Zealand.

Martine's parents were Simon HANSEN BARSTAD and Tori (surname unknown) from Barstad farm, Sokndalen, Rogaland, Norway.

According to the article, HOLT had 4 children: 2 sons and 2 daughters. All appear to have been born between 1875-1881 (approx).

The daughters' names were Junette ("Nettie") HOLT and Thomasine, but I have no information on his sons.

Nettie was b. 22 Jun 1877 and married (1) Mikkel Andreas (Andrew) BARTILSEN, and (2) Hans Gabriel STALSON.

I would like information on John and Martine's children, children's spouses, and grandchildren. Names, dates and places of birth/death.

Thank you.

Pip

According to the 1900 census in Tainter, Dunn, Wisconsin, the following are:

John J Holt b Jan 1850
Martine H b Apr 1850
Samuel J b Jan 1874
Minnie M b Jun 1885
Martin J b Mar 1887
Tilla J b Jun 1890

According to the census John emigrated about 1869 and Martine emigrated about 1857. They've also been married for 26 years.

I'll look and see what I find for them.

By the way, that article is awesome and so informative!!

In the 1910 census for Tainter, Dunn, Wisconsin, Sam and Tilla are the only children living with them. John age 60, Marther (we know that's wrong!) age 60, Sam age 26 and Tilla age 19.

Since Parish records now are scanned new info can be added to your family. Example: The birth record for Martine Hansdatter Barstad tells us that she was the daughter of Gmd. (Farmer) Simon Hanssen and his h: (hustru) Tøri Pettersdatter, they lived on Vestre Barstad and gave their daughter, born April 7, the name Marthine on April 14. See #24
According to naming practice she would be Marthine Simonsdatter.
Simon and Tøri and their two children moved out of Sokndal April 19 1857 going to "Nordamerika" Marthine was then 7 years old and her brother Hans Gabriel 3 3/4 yers old, see #45, 46, 47 and 48 here

I believe I found Martin J (born as Julius Martin Holt) in the 1920 census for Westport, Brown, South Dakota married to Mae age 27, children Edgar J age 7, and Dorothy L age 3 years 10 months. According to the World War I draft registration, Julius Martin Holt was born on 11 Mar 1888.

In the 1905 Wisconsin census for Tainter, John J age 54, Martina age 54, Nettie age 27, Sam age 28, Minnie Age 19, Julius age 18, Tilla age 14, with Andrew Barttelson age 35, John age 8, Monroe age 5, Maybelle age 3 and Selmer age 1.

It is online, but you have to subscribe to Ancestry.com to look at it. However, you can get a free trial for 14 days then cancel it before the trial is over...before a credit card is charged.
