my great-grandfather was in the Norwegian Merchant Marine in the last 1800's. One of the signatures on his Norwegian passport is "Amundsen". I believe that it is the signature of Jens Amundsen, who owned and captained ships during that time period. I have been unsucessful in trying to find a listing of the ships that Jens Amundsen owned or captained in the 1890's. The info on the passport appears to be "Meoss" and the date of October 30, 1896. Thanks for any help you might be able to give.

Hi,
there were several ship owners named Jens Amundsen in Østfold county of Norway, one of them was the father of the famous Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen (1872-1928).

Roald A. was the son of ship owner Jens Amundsen (ca 1821-ca 1886) from Borge, Østfold, close to the city of Moss. See census-1875 and Link.

Roalds father died about 1886 so he can not have "captained any ships in the 1890's". But maybe he had a son named Jens...?

Another possibility:
The 1900-census from Borge, Østfold, has a listing of one ship owner named Jens Amundsen born ca 1846.
