I'm trying to find any information about the Olsen's that travelled to NZ on the hovding in 1872. Hans and Lisa Anna (she was also know just as Anna). They came with 3 children Christian, carl and Hannah. Hans was born in 1835 in Trogstad, Norway and Lisa in 1832 in Hannacha Varmland, Sweden (we think). How do i find information about them before the hovding trip to NZ. These were my great great grand parents, they died in 1921 and 1925 in Norsewood and are both buried in Norsewood as are most of there children. I would love to hear from anyone who thinks they can help. Thanks Sarah |

Trøgstad district/parish is in Østfold province/county of Norway. You'll have to study in the records for that area to find information of the earlier years (and perhaps family) of Hans. For Lisa you'll have to consult Swedish records.
Study good basic research advice for Norway - http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~norway/articles.html
Do a forum search here for the Hovding - the trips of that ship have been discussed a number of times previously and you might find someone with special information to consult.
If we find anything to help you get started - we'll add it as we can. |

I have access to Genline right now, for the Swedish records. There is no such parish called Hannacha. If you're sure it begins with "H", there is Hammaro, Holmedal, Huggenas, and Hogerud. Any of these sound familiar? |

I will try and look up the records for Sweden. I have found in other family records that Lisa Olsen was also called Lisa Jonasdt Gronberg (and also Anna Lisa) she was born in 1832, one record says in hannacha Varmland, sweden but in other records it says Avirka Sweden so i will try and look up both and also re check the spellings of these places. Thanks for your help Sarah |

The LDS library catalog indicates that there is an Arvika stadsförsamling (rural parish of a city) in Jösse judicial district in Värmland, Sweden. |

Hans Olsen (37) with his wife Anne Lise (38) and three children Christian (8), Carl August (6) and Hanna Elise (4) listed in the police register of emigrants from Oslo in 1872. Høvding from Oslo 1872 That record lists their previous residence as having been in Østre Aker, Oslo fylke, Norway.
The parish records of Trøgstad, Østfold fylke, Norway do list a birth/baptism of a boy named Hans to an Ole Nielsen? in 1835. Record #48

I just realised I didn't tie Anne Lisa GRÖNBERG into the family group. The other information about her in "Svenskarna..." is this: M about 1885 in Christiania to Hans OLSEN, Norwegian. The family emig from Vestre Aker to NZ 1872 husband, wife children: CHristian Hagbart 8, Karl August 6, Hanna Christina 4 by "Hovding". Died Norsewood 29 Nov 1925, aged 93. M 3 (married 3 children) Occupation: Domestic duties. Also known as Anne Elise GRONBERG. |
