Looking for homeland and living descendents in Norway...
Here's what I know so far:
Christian, born 1832 in Norway - married
Annie Mary (unknown) who was born Jan 2 1833 in Norway.

They had the following children and lived near Christian, Oslo, Norway:
...Anna Emelia Evenson, 18 Jul 1862
...Helena Evenson (in passenger record, not known as child)
...Elmer O Evenson, 07 Feb 1865
...Carl Anton Evenson, 5 Aug 1868
...Sema Evenson, Abt 1873
...Segur O Evenson, Abt. 1875
...Peter Alfred Evenson, 12 Apr 1878

I found Anna Mary passenger records as arriving New York July 7 1881 on the SS Wyoming. She was travelling without her husband and eldest son Elmer.

Family oral history says Christian and Elmer left Norway first to get established with a contact named Gustave Gunderson, son to Hans Gunderson and Isabell Lee. Hans was born Sept 15, 1832 and was from Amt Nedre, Norway (?) and his wife born Feb 7 1835 in Vaksdal farm near Bergen, Norway.

These are all the clues I have to the original homeland. Ultimately looking for the living descendents of the Evenson family in Norway.

The Evenson family arrived in Amerika and originally settled in the Dakota Territory (now the Clay County area) and migrated to Redwood Falls, Minnesota - then west to Seattle, Washington.
Any help someone can provide to help locate this originial family is appreciated! Please email - dloper3@comcast.net

Thanks everyone! - Sincerely, Donna

Hi This is most likely Christian, Annie, Anna E. and Elmer (Hilmar) in the 1865 census for Rakkestad, Ostfold Click Here

Gustave Gunderson would have been Gustave Hanson in Norway so he could have been Annie Mary's brother

Kristen Evens. 32 years old from Rakkestad - could be my Christian Evenson
Anne M. Hansd. hans Kone g 30 - could be my Anna Mary from Edsberg? - is Hansdotter her maiden name?
Hilmar O. Kristens. deres Søn ug 1 m Rakkestad - could be my Elmer O ( a son)
Anna E. Kristensd. deres Datter ug 3 k Rakkestad - could be my Anna Emelia ( a daughter)
32 Anne Olsd. Tjenestepige ug 27 k Edsberg - but who would this be?
33 Marie Johansd. hendes Datter ug 1 k Rakkestad Prgj. - and would this be her daughter?

Also, could you tell me if you were able to also find this family in the 1875 census in Norway to confirm?
I don't think they emigrated until 1880. This is great.
One last question - can you describe for me the location? Is Eidsberg a city, county, state (landscape?) What does Prgj mean?
Thank you very, very much !!! - Sincerely, Donna

Prgj is short for Prestegjeld which is Parish, both Rakkestad and Eidsberg are parishes in Østfold County.
There is no 1875 census for the area, but baptismal records could be used to confirm. Record for Anna Emelia is #162
she was baptized Anne Emilie and parents were Christen Evensen and Anne Marie Hansdatter.
If your Elmers midle name was Oscar #91
Hilmar Oscar could be another proof, same parents, same place - Sandanger in Rakkestad.
Your Segur was baptized Olaf Sigurd, see #92
he was born April 22 1875.
The baptismal record for Christen Evensen is #91
his parents were Even Christensen and Oleana Olsdatter.
Christen and Anne Marie were married July 7 1859, see #2
and Anne Marie was born Jan 22 1836, see #22
her parents were Hans Eilertsen and Anne Andersdatter at the Nygaard farm.
Peter Alfred was baptized Peder Alf, see #20

How incredibly amazing !!! I wish to send you blessing and thanks. I have been looking very long and this is a tremendous help. I will do my best to translate the handwriting on the right columns. I am thrilled to have these.
I Ultimately hope this can lead me to find a living descendent. Now that I can confirm the original family and parish.
Please, let me know if I can find anyone in Amerika for you in the future. Much appreciated.

Christen Evensens parents Even (21 year old, born on Kaaterud) and Oleana (23 years old, born on Rakkestad Præstegaard) were married in 1833, see #17
Christens father was Even Christensen Kaaterud, one of the best men, Lars Evensen, could be his brother.Oleanas father Ole Christofersen was dead when they married.

His parents were Christen Evensen and Sidsel Amundsdatter at the Kaaterud farm. They were married May 28 1806, see #9
Oleana Olsdatter was born Oct 7 1810 and baptized Oct 14, see #92
Oleanas father was Ole Christensen and Lene Brynildsdatter at Rakkestads Præstegaard.

Both Hans Eilertsen and Anne Andersdatter were at Østbye when they got married Oct 28 1824, see #33
In 1801 Hans was 2 years old living with his mother Anne Jacobsdatter who was a widow, see here
Anne was born at the Rudstad farm, in 1801 her parents and siblings are here

No, Hans Eilertsen and Anne Andersdatter are parents to Anne Marie Hansdatter! Christen Evensen who married Sidsel Amundsdatter has to be an "Even", Christen were from Kaaterud, look at the 1801 census and you will find that his parents most likely are Even Larsen and Mari Pedersdatter. This will have to be confirmed however!

Can you tell me if either Præstegaard or Kaaterud farms are still in existence with descendents still living on the homeland? How might I find that out for myself? I will start with Google in a little bit, but did these farms evolve into towns? It seems like Rakkestad is a small community of about 7,000 people (in 2004). How would I make contact with someone living there today?

I do not know if this works but try Rakkestad prestegard here
you can zoom in and get an air photo.
You can also use the same map to search for Kåterud, looks like the farm (or cottage place) is abandoned.
Choose Kåterudveien 26!

When I use a Norweigen translator online, it does the following:
For: "Hendes søn, uægte" (can't find a translation for uægte)
To: "Befall søn uægte" (where befall can also mean occur or chance. Does this indicate a birth out-of-wedlock?
Or, how can you tell in this census (1801) that Anne Jacobsdtr is a widow? The census also says:
For: Lever ved sine hænders arbejde - the translation engine converts it to
To: Live by against her hænders work (I don't know what hænders means).

Working now to see if I can interpret the relationships in the 1801 census text report. You are being very patient with my lack of experience with Norwegian records. Appreciate that. - Donna
