Hi, I am still searching for the ship that Lars Ellingsen arrived in Australia in the mid 1850,s as a seaman, not a passenger. My two queries are; 1.Was there any sort of registration of Norwegian mariners in the 1850s? 2. I have been told verbally that a couple of ships left Norway direct to Australia in this period. Can anyone help with these two lines of enquiry please. Regards, Brian. |

Thank you very much Mr, Mrs, MsHopkins wherever you are. This article has given me some hope that my Grt. Grt. Grandfathers transport to Australia may be able to be traced. I have now posted a query on the ships forum, a long shot but you never know. Thanks again, Brian |

Still looking for Lars Ellingsens seamans records. Following the advice given by Hopkins in a reply to my initial posting, and after close reading of the Norway Heritage article on the Registration of Seamen that was recommended, I contacted a Norwegian Genealogist to do some research on both the Sjofartsannotasjonsrulle and Sjofartshovedrulle registers. He has reported back to say that the records on pre 1860 (Lars was in Australia in 1856) do not exist. Can anyone help with any further clarification on whether I am seeking the impossible in looking for a seamen working pre 1857.

Hi Brian not sure if I can help or not but have you had a look in the National Archives in Australia to see if he appears there? Whereabouts in Australia are you? I have just had a look in the NSW ship deserters 1852-1900 but he is not there. Have you looked for him where he came from in Norway? I am no expert like most olf the people on her but I too ma looking for my great grandfather and have recently found him in Canada but that is not here yet.
Regards

Thanks for the reply Kerrie. I am in Melbourne and we can't find him in any deserters/left ship records here. Do you have any clues on where in the National Archives to look? We are still hopeful that the Norway end will come up with something but it looks as though pre 1860 seamens records are a bit pot luck depending on where they signed on.

For most of the Norwegian records you will need to get microfilm or go to the regional archives here in Norway to access the original records. There is a database where you can search for records, it is only a catalog where you can see what records are existing and where to find them: Felleskatalogen for Arkivverket
It is only in Norwegian |

Brian try and see if you can find him in the National Archives in Australia first it might give you some more hints on where to look in Norway its worth a try and only costs your searching time on the net. www.naa.gov.au click on collections then research. Put his name in and see how you go but remember to try all different spellings. I find the more you play with a name the better the result. Not being rude but you have to remember that when they got here their accent was usually very heavy and when others hear it it is written down differently especially in the time you are talking about. Hope this helps
