I believe that my great grandfather was a sailor and wondered if anyone could help me to locate his Norwegian shipping/military records.
He is said to have gone to sea as a kitchen hand at 11 years of age and had signed off on his third voyage around the world as a merchant seaman.
He was born in Stokke Vestfold in 1863.
He disembarked in Melbourne Australia in 1887 and he stated he had arrived on the Matilda Sailing Barque but I have been unable locate records of this ship coming to Australia in around that time.

If you go to my posting under mariners there is an article I was referred to by Hopkins that gives advice on how to trace seamen. I have had no luck looking for someone pre 1860 but you might be more successful because of the date 1883. Good luck.

The father worked in the saw-mill, but isn't registered as he didn't own any land.
