I am the grandson of Mary Rose Sexe (1922-2000) of Louisville, Kentucky. Mary was the daughter of Henry Sexe who was born in Iowa and died in Louisville (1897-1972). Henry was the son of Alfred H Sexe, born in Minnesota (1872) who was the son of Henry O Sexe who may have been born in Norway (1846). My research has found Henry O Sexe residing in Minnesota. The census's I have found seem to clearly identify his birth year as 1846. I have found a reference to a Hans Skjone Asmundsen Sexe (1855-1934) having a son named Henry, but the dates of birth don't seem to work. I know little about Norwegian research, but with some help may be able to link my Sexe line to some of the lines I have seen discussed on this forum. Thanks in advance for anyone willing to help this novice researcher.

Henrik Osmundsen Sexe (22) [Henry O Sexe] left Bergen on the ship Ørnen (="the Eagle") April 23rd 1868, arriving Quebec June 6.

Here he is (working as a servant) on the farm Hovland in Kinservig, Hordaland, census-1865.

Probably his birth-record and parents.
Henrik has a brother named Hans Sjone Osmundsen b. 1855.

When Henrik was born his father Aasmund Jakobsen was a chief administrative officer in Ullensvang and was living at the Skjeldaas farm.
When Hans Sjøne was born, see #13
the family lived at the nedre Sexe farm.
Here is Henriks grandparents in 1801

I'm still searching for any family tie to the Sekse farm in Ullensvang. (You'll find various spellings of the farm and the people's names through the years of various documents.)
Henry/Henrik's parents in the 1865 census -

"Nøstteigen" farm in Ullensvang

When Hendrik was born it looks like they were living on either Seljestad or Skjeggeda farm in Odda (area just south of Ullensvang).
Record #31

I'll investigate that 1801 census location to see if I can find the family mentioned in "Odda, Ullensvang og Kinsarvik" books.

What line are you trying to connect to Jeffrey? What reference sources are you checking in?

Ah - "Naustteigen" was a small sub-section (plass) of the old and larger Nedre Sekse farm in Ullensvang. Henrik's family moved there about 1859.
Henry/Hendrik had at least two brothers and two sisters that also emigrated to America. I believe that the Hans Sexe you found was one of those brothers.

The family can be found on page 352 of "Odda, Ullensvang og Kinsarvik i gamal og ny tid" Volume IV/2; by Olav Kolltveit.

(I'm sorry Jan Peter and Einar - I hadn't noticed that I duplicated a few of items you'd posted earlier. I had my nose buried in the bygdeboks and wasn't paying close enough attention.)

Thank you for the prompt and detailed responses. Hopkins, I was trying to find the ancestors of Henry O Sexe. My research had stalled on this man, my great-great-great grandfather. The information provided in the above posts will get me moving again. I have been documenting family tree using Ancestry.com. I have had mixed results with this tool. Some of the family trees are obviously wrong, but as a novice, I had to start somewhere. Some other branches of my family tree reach out to Denmark and Norway, therefore I am likely to be using these resources in the future. Thanks again for your assistance.

There will probably be a number of family trees and entries available through such collections as found in locations such as "Link 2" above (Ancestral File submissions in the 1980's by a Nevada "Sexey" researcher). They should all be checked carefully for accuracy - persons not fully understanding Norwegian naming practices and the sometimes changing parish boundaries can give you some misleading information - but I agree that they can often be very useful as starting points.

The ancient areas of Ullensvang, Odda and Kinsarvik are well covered by books about the history of the farms there and the genealogies of the people who lived on them, of course the books are written in Norwegian but still enormously useful to us. Those sections of that steep sided branch of the Hardanger fjord are beautiful and you can find some wonderful photos in tourist pamphlets and online. (But don't expect spelling to have EVER been consistent and as you research practice looking for things that would 'sound-alike'.)
The published books are readily available to us in the US on LDS microfilms and the parish records are available on both LDS microfilm and are in the online scanned collection of the Digitalarkivet website.

There is excellent advice available for your study -- Understanding Norwegian Naming Patterns, using Norwegian bygdeboks, parishs records, probate records, etc. A personally favored collection of 'beginner' articles I would recommend for your study is here -
http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~norway/articles.html

You and I share family links to a number of the same Ullensvang and Odda area farms - but that doesn't readily indicate actual family relationship between us. Just that our ancestors could have been neighbors that resided on the various sections of the same farm - at the same time or hundreds of years apart. I'm never surprised to find another researcher in the old records of the Sørfjord branch of the Hardanger who actually turns out to be a 6th, 7th or even 11th cousin.

My grandfather's sister, Tina Opheim, was married to Henry Sexe, likely the one born in 1897. They were a part of family gatherings in Thor, IA, when I was little, 1940s and 50s. I remember him as a tall, slender, handsome man who had a kind presence about him. Tina would have been a daughter of Jacob Opheim, who has been mentioned on this form in a thread about Opheim family.

Petersjo, My Henry Sexe (1897) was married to Rose Lima Mulloy of Louisville, Kentucky. What was the name of your Henry Sexe's father? Finding information on these Sexe's had been difficult. I would appreciate any information that you may have that could help me document these folks.

KMN24, I have responded to your email and am looking forward to sharing information with you.

Jeffrey - The Henry Sexe that "petersjo" mentions is NOT the same man. The Henry Sexe that "petersjo" mentions was born in 1882. He also had a son named Henry G. Sexe who was probably born about 1910 (estimate from a US census for Humboldt Co., IA).

They have links to the same farm(s) in Ullensvang but I don't see any direct family tie between them after very brief review.
