After a query posted in the Mariners Forum regarding a seaman arriving in Australia around 1856, I was referred to the following article: norwayheritage.com/aticles/templates/genealogy.asp?aticled=4&zoneid=2 I am now informed by a Norwegian researcher that the registration details mentioned in this article are not available for pre 1860 sailors. Can anyone confirm that searching for the details of a Norwegian seaman during the period 1850- 56 is not possible and that the details in the above article need to be revised.

It depends on where in Norway the sailor lived when going to sea. For some areas there will be sources available pre 1860, but for many of the smaller districts the sources are richest from about 1860. |

Then the question is where he lived when he was about 15-16 years old, could it be Tønsberg, Sandefjord, or maybe Larvik? |

The seaman I am looking for, Lars Ellingsen, was born/christened in Sannidal in 1834. Later the family moved to Kragero where his father, Elling Knudsen, died in 1850. I am assuming that Lars would have been living with the family up until that time at least. If he did sign on as a seaman in the period 1850-1856 (he was married in Australia on 1-1-1857), I have been assuming he would have signed on in the Kragero district. |

Hmm, it would help if you could keep all the posts regarding the same person in one topic. The eldest rolls in the Kragerø records dates back to 1824, but the main roll and youngsters roll only dates back to 1860. I think the existing pre 1860 rolls for Kragerø are just some fragments of early munster lists, I'll check when I get a chance. |

Apologies Borge but my posting on this forum was about confirming whether advice given in an article on the Norwegian Heritage site, was in fact accurate. I do not know why the posting regarding another seaman responded. I am very appreciative of any help I can get on this matter. |

Sorry, my fault.
The link I posted was for a different mariner who also emigrated to Australia, only some years later. That topic was discussed at the same time, so my reply ended up in the wrong topic...
