I've just read all of your postings and most of my questios have been answered. My Grt Grt Grt Grandfather was Captain Hans Helmer Leth of Birkenes Norway. His son was Samuel Leth, ships carpenter from Tromoy who died near Arendal Norway aged only 39 in 1864.
His son Jorge Emiil Leth was taken by Captain Leth as a cabin boy. The obviously unhappy Jorge (George) jumped ship in Port Adelaide aged 9or 10 in 1864 but was captured. In 1870 he tried again aged 16 and was successful. The ship was apparently involved in the wheat race of the time or so my 85 year old mother recalls her Grandfather telling her in the 1930s
During the next few years George he made his way to the NSW goldfields near Bathurst, married a chinese girl, moved to Sydney and had seven children. That much I know. I also know Hans siblings and Parents but.... I've had problems finding records of the Ship Jorge "escaped" from.
You've given me hope that I will be able to discover more by accessing the records in Norway but I'm unsure how to do this.
I've emailed the Port Adelaide Authority and am awaiting an answer re: the shipping registers of the time.
Maybe someone reading this forum in Norway can shine a light. Good luck with your research everyone from southern Tasmania.
