I found some relatives listed in the digitalarkivet and it shows they left from Bergen 7/7 1886 and it lists the Thingvalla Line. When i look up info. on the Thingvalla line it sounds as if the ships left from Copenhagen and stopped in Christiana, but this doesn't seem right that these people traveled from bergen across the counrty to Christiana, does it? i don't know if i am just not understanding this correctly or reading something wrong. If anyone can help, it would be greatly appreciated. People i'm referring to are oline Jacobsdtr from Selje and her children Wilhelm Reielsen Hals, Alette Reielsdatter Hals and Marie and Rasmine. |

Well, the fact is that many people did go from Bergen to Christiania to board a Thingvalla Line ship. You should observe that in 1886 there were no direct passenger service between Bergen and American ports. The emigrants from Bergen had to go by ship to England or Germany, or by train to Christiania before they could embark on the transatlantic steamer. The Thingvalla Line was a less expensive alternative for a number of years, and for many people just as convenient, as they avoided language problems. |

Not by train in 1886, the railway Bergen-Christiania was opened in 1909...

thank you both. I think my confusion was from the fact there wasn't rail service so it seemed illogical they would take that route, but i suppose they did what they had to do. Any good sites for searching for passenger lists for the Thingvalla line? I have tried numerous searches through Ancestry.com, Castle garden and the Ships List site and find nothing. |

The S/S Haakon Adelstein left Bergen 07 July 1886 for Hamburg. I don't know if that was part of the Thingvalla Line. But it will point us in a different direction. The S/S Thingvalla did not leave from Christiania in July of that year. S/S Haakon Adelstein

Got me! I remember seeing information about the Norwegian American Steamship Co., which had sailings between (mainly) Bergen and New York in the 1870-ies, some times conveyed the passenger by a coastal steamer from Christiania to the Bergen. Also, if you look at one of the 1888 departures for the S/S Thingvalla, you will see a note about a feeder ship from Bergen, which was found in a contemporary newspaper (I see there is a small issue with the dates). |
