Hi Jackie,
After searching many times in the scanned parish records for Sor-Trondelag just this weekend, I believe I may have found him. There is a John Christian who was born May 26, 1859 in the Stadsbygd Parish records. That is the right birthday for John Johnson Lien who died in Pierce County, ND. He married Melena (Maline) Heggen who was Zacarius Heggen's daughter. I then checked his confirmation record and same birthdate. His parent's are listed as a John Knudsen and a Beret Marie Johnsdatter who were married Nov. 1?, 1858. In their marriage records John Knudsen's father is listed as Knud Caspersen. I also found I believe a brother of John Christian named Ole Andreas who was born on Sept. 23, 1862. I found the family in the 1865 Census in Sor-Trondelag on the Vaarumhoug farm. If I found the right person/family, the next question would be the father of John who is listed as Knud Caspersen. Is this Knud Caspersen a brother to Malen's father Zacarius Heggen from previous postings and were John and Malena cousins?
I hope my posting has not confused everyone. I have the patience to search parish records for hours but sometimes am unsure of my findings, especially not knowing the area. Thank You, Kathy

Hi Jackie,
I apologize for not being able to show images I have found. I need to learn how to do that. Here are the page numbers of the records that I have found from above posting on Stadsbygd Parish records for Sor-Trondelag.
John Knudsen's birth - on page 22 in the year 1859. John's confirmation on Oct. 1879 is on page 1879.
John's possible brother Ole Andreas - page 58 in year 1862.
If I am on the right track now to figure out why he took the name Lien in the States. This is my cousin's family and they know nothing of John Johnson Lien in Norway so have no information to help from them. Thanks Again, Kathy

Hi Kathy,

Here is the page for a Jon Johanson near the right age leaving through Trondheim:

http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=9&filnamn=EMITROND&gardpostnr=30979&merk=30979#ovre

2316 1 02.05.1882 03.05.1882 Jon Johans. ug Arbeidsm m 24 Stadsbygden Black R. F. Wisc Inman Dampsk. Tasso 197 80
30980 1882 9 4

2317 02.05.1882 03.05.1882 Peter Johans. ug Arbeidsm m 20 Stadsbygden Black R. F. Wisc Inman Dampsk. Tasso 197 80

There are a number of John Lien in the ND Naturazliations database at the Institute for Regional Studies site. Here is one from Pierce County:

Lien, John Norway 1st February 17, 1912 Pierce

I guess you will have to follow whichever clue leads you true (first name, patronymic name, place of origin, vs whatever else) Do the birthdates between the John in the ND death index match the birthdate in the baptismal?

Hilsen,
Jackie M.

Hi Jackie,
Yes, the date of birth is the same in Pierce County, ND as in Norway. My cousin gave me the birth/death date of John Johnson Lien and it is correct according to ND Death Index online and also in the Find A Grave listings for cemetery in Pierce County. My cousin told me that John immigrated also in 1883 with Melana (Maline) Heggen. In postings from page 1 by Lester is the record for Zakarias Heggen family and if you click on the next one under Zakarias Heggen's last chilc (Johan) is a Johan Johnson also immigrating to same area in Minnesota. Trying to figure if that is the John Johnson Lien.
I e-mailed Carra from previous postings on the Heggen family to see if she had any info. on John Johnson Lien but have not heard back yet. She had e-mailed me information on the Heggen family but was not able to solve the John Lien mystery yet. Thanks again, Kathy

To Kathy and others.
How to show the records you have found and share them with others can be learned here.
The posts will not be showing up as "Last postings" so the testing will be done in peace and quiet.
It was easier than expected, two instructions.

Good luck

Kċre
