Hello everyone,
I am from the UK, and I am seeking any information on the surname HOPLA.
I have found it first in West Wales, UK, in 1623.
But I am unable to establish it origin.
I note that there is a town called Hopla in Norway, which proves nothing....
So! my question, does anyone know of anyone named Hopla, Hoplah or Hopler ?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Common Norwegians did not use family surnames before ca 1900. The law of permanent surnames came 1923.
Common Norwegians used patronymics and the farm name as an "address surname".
Hopla is todays spelling of a farm name in Åsen, Nord-Trøndelag county. The oldish / Danish spelling was Hoplen. A few families from the farm took the farm name in use as a family surname about 1900. They used the old spelling Hoplen. I have not found any use of the spelling Hopla used as a surname. Anyway, a small farm as Hopla would not be used as a family surname before ca 1900. |
