Hi Vivi

Was unable to do any Ancestry research today will try again next week unless somebody else has Ancestry and is willing to take a look at the 1900 Josephine Swensen family.

But here is something a Josephine Swenson in the Washington Secretary of State death records--age about right, father's name right mother's name half right:

Death Records
Collection: Washington State Death Records
County: Statewide
da reference number: {113C5766-6CC4-4CF0-B51E-E4809506F2AD}
image number: 1708
document number: 56
document reference id: 1206
name: Josephine Swenson
date of death: 29 Jul 1943
age: 81
gender: Female
race or color:
place of burial:
burial year:
cemetery name:
father name: Ole Peterson
father birth place:
mother name: Martha Anderson
mother birth place:
death place: Tacoma, Pierce, Washington

Citation: Washington State Death Certificate Index 1907-1960

And at the Tacoma Area Obits database, these two:

SWENSON, ASSEUS
Date of Death: 06-Jan-1946
Indexing Source: 08 JAN 1946 12

SWENSON, JOSEPHINE
Date of Death: 29-Jul-1943
Indexing Source: 29 JUL 1943 24

And a possible baptismal for Asseus:
Source information: Rogaland county, Årdal in Hjelmeland, Parish register copy nr. B 6 (1856-1884), Birth and baptism records 1866, page 17., #30

Okay, today I had a look at the Oserus (and it could be Aserus, the writing is very maleable) Swenson family it could be the 1910 & 1930 family but there are several perplexities.

Town of Superior, Douglas County, Wisconsin
Swensen, Oserus head born June or Jan 1865 age 34 married 5 years b. Norway, fa b. Norway, mo b. Norway came to US 1884 16 years resident, Naturalized citizen, carpenter renting home

Swensen, Josephine wife b. Aug 1862 age 37 married 5 years b. 1 child born, 1 child living b. Norway, fa b. Norway, mo b. Norway came to US 1890 10 years here

Swensen, Augusta daughter b. July 1900 age 4 /12 Or ?? b. Iowa fa b. Norway, mo b. Norway

Haven't found the family in the 1920 census.

Asseus Swenson is found in the Ancestry version of the Washington state Death Index d. 6 Jan 1946 Pierce County, age 79 born about 1867 male.

Hilsen,

Jackie M.

Yes, this is "my" Josefine/Josephine.

Lately I have found more information about her, but I'm not able to find her emigration.

And jkmarler, thank you for finding the correct family for me living in Duluth. I also believe the Asseus you found in Årdal in Hjelmeland is the correct husband of Josephine.

I was new to genealogy in 2008.
One of the things I learned from that search was not to trust old notes!

The note about Josefine having a daughter Hattie born Sept. 20, 1889 turned out to have been written by a relative who did some research about this family 45 - 50 years ago. He was not able to find out more, so the note was put together with my grandfather's few photos and little information about his aunts. When I started searching I thought all the information originated from my greatgrandfather who had some contact with his sisters.
But Hattie was born to another Josefine married to a Anders Swenson.
I had spent a lot of time searching for the "Josefine, A??? and Hattie Swenson - family" before I posted this query and sent you who helped me in wrong directions too. Sorry.
But you managed to find the correct family - with my wrong information. Impressing!

"My" Josefine had 5 sons and no daughters. Augusta, the "daughter" in the 1900 census, must be a mistake for Swen August. (birthmonth correct, birthyear wrong, age correct, birthplace correct).
You found the correct Josefine and Asseus who died in Tacoma.

Here are their sons:
Sven August born April 12, 1896 in the town(?) Norway in Iowa and died Jan 22, 1988 in Superior, Wisconsin.
Oscar M. born Aug 8, 1897 in Norway in Iowa and burried Aug 7, 1900 in Superior. (I don't know what the M. is short for or why he died so young.)
Adolph Emmanuel born Des 1, 1900 in Superior and died May 11, 1974 in Covina, Los Angeles. (He had a son, Ronald born sometime between 1930 and 1943. I'm so looking forward to the 1940 census and hopefully more information about him!)
William Fredrik born Oct 14, 1903 in Superior and died Des 1, 1965 in Tacoma.
Herman Waldemar born Sept 12, 1907 in Duluth and died Aug 27, 1981 in Enumclaw, King co., Washington.

Vivi,

There is a California Birth Index 1905-1985 at www.familysearch.org.

And at this web address is quite a nice examination of the 1940 census due to be released on 2 April:

Hi

Thank you.
However I don't think Ronald was born in California. I think the family moved to California between 1943 and 1946. (Info. from two obituaries.)
