Using this great web site, and this 1881 Map, I went to my ancestors Fylke, typed in the farm name, and upped popped the map with a list of people living there. Including their address and phone numbers.

I have now found a living relative!

Just thought I would pass this info on, as I haven't seen it mentioned previously.

I have proposed the use of this map several times when somebody ask whether "their" farm still exist, or how far is it between here and there, but I have not proposed its use for people presently living at the farms. I would be interested to see what you looked up and the resulting relatives!

I don't get any hit for a farm Roven, so when you search on Roven Oppland you just get people - since you know that one of them is a relative I think that this is a coincidence or pure luck. I don't think it was the intention when building the map that you could search for people living on the farms.

I didn't mean to imply, that you could do a people search on this 1881 Map web site. It would be similar to searching a phone book by names, except it would narrow down the list of possiblities by seeing names of people living on the farm. And if you're lucky, a name could show up as a possible relative.

??

Of course you can do a people search on 1881.no! That is what it is.
It is the "official" yellow and white pages for Norway, similar to e.g. anywho.com in the US.
The map service is just an extra feature.

The phonenumber 1881 is the number to dial for directory assistance in Norway, equal to 411 in the US.

This is not a question about whether 1881.no can be used to search for people - it can - and it can be used for several other purposes, but the question is will a look up of a farm from the map service also bring up people living on the farm - and the answer is it does not - you will get people with the same surname as the farm and whom would they be?

Do you mean Roven in Nord Fron Les.

Roven in Nord Fron has changed to Rova, so if you enter (1881 map) and:
"Rova Fron" you will see the farm.

Kåre,

Yes, it is Nord Fron, and the farm name now is Rova. The gentleman remembered(has to be hand me down stories) "a big strong woman(she died in 1857), that knocked down the guys if needed."

I have used the zoom feature to find the photo of his house.

For privacy reasons, I don't want to publish his name.

I used a friend from Trondheim to call him and verify our relationship. He doesn't have a computer, and can't speak English, so we will be using the snail mail.

Les,
the Snail mail still works as it did for the emigrants.
I am sure your friend in Trondheim enjoy the hours he spend in translating your letters.

Lillian Kristiansen in Dis-Norge seems to have information from Roven/Rova, she helps Marianne Gjerde from Ålesund.

It act about Mari Olsdr. born on Roven 1857, daughet of Ole Østensen Roven . b. 1813 and Kari Knudsdr.
His father was Østen Olsen Roven.

Perhaps these name are well-known to you?
Here is the link to Roven it starts about 2 inches from bottom.

Wow, this has been my lucky week. Found another living relative.

Thanks Kåre, I have given up on moving back further than 1799, so I will move ahead and fill in some living blank spots.
