This thread is a follow-on from the thread: Roald AMUNDSEN (1872-1928), Norwegian Explorer http://www.norwayheritage.com/snitz/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=2139
The information I have on Amund AMUNDSEN and Elise LARSDATTER is posted here: www.norsewoodcemetery.co.nz/amundsen-amund-descendants/ This includes several generations of ancestors.
I have been researching the journal of Sylvia MURCH for several years. The journal also makes the claim of a close biological relationship between Amund AMUNDSEN and explorer Roald AMUNDSEN (that Amund was Roald's paternal uncle).
I have made contact with a woman who is related to Roald AMUNDSEN. She has done extensive research on Roald's family, but CANNOT find any common ancestry between Amund and Roald.
The genealogical information I have (follow above link) also confirms this.
Siblings of Amund AMUNDSEN emigrated to Australia. A descendant of Amund's sister (who was known in Australia as Kate) has correspondence from Noel MURRAY saying that he met someone in the extended family who knew who fabricated the story of Roald's relationship to Amund. However, she would never disclose the story-teller's identity.
Unless there is an in-law type of connection, then it's unlikely they were related at all.
I think it is important to understand that Norwegian immigrants brought to NZ under Vogel's immigration scheme were all dirt poor, and were, basically, brought to NZ as white slaves to clear the bush, and establish road, rail, and telegraph infrastructures - jobs the Brit's didn't want to do.
The Scandinavians weren't treated any better than Maori by the British and, in New Zealand's class-conscious British colony, many Scandinavians fabricated stories about their families aimed at elevating their social status. The book Johanna's World describes the PASO family's fabricated claim to be descended from French aristocracy (p11-12). Similar fabrications were COMMON among poor Norwegian immigrants, including one of my ancestral families.
It's possible that's what has happened here. Other threads mentioning Amund AMUNDSEN's family can be found here:

Pip,
thanks for the info you have posted. I have a lot of detailed info supplied some years ago by Noel Selwyn MURRAY, (he is listed in one of your links). I will dig out all this paperwork, and print out the data you have listed and compare it with your data. you have listed. Many thanks for your great work.
Incidentally, my understanding is that there is NO relationship between AMUND and ROALD AMUNDSEN. the reason for this furphy might well be as you stated!.

I am related to Roald Amundsen on the Botne side of the family. An Amund Amundsen was married to Anne Kathrine Johannessen Vadholmen in Halder. He died there, however. I don't know if he had a family before he married her. He was her second husband. We are related through Kirsten Jensdatter Botne, Oliana Nielsdatter Kile, Anne Jonsdater Kile, Anne Kristine Jensdatter Gravning, Jens Engebreth Amundsen the father of Roald Engebegt Gravning Amundsen,born1872. |

To Mary Keys, thanks for your emails. but our AMUNDSEN side is NOT related to Roald. Please refer to earlier Post above by Pip re the tendency of some AMUNDSENs in the past to "claim" relationship with Roald as a means of "social climbing" ! Good Luck with your quest in unfolding your family tree, with best wishes
