Dear All:

In the County of Aust Agder, Grimstad, I see parish registers going only to 1869. Is this region known as something else before then?

thank you.

Thank you Eibache. So if I were looking for the birth record of a Gundar Bakken, born February 20, 1836....would it be available on the Digiarkivet?

I assume you should search in Øyestad / Fjære: 1827-1839, Ministerialbok - the given name was most likely Gunder and Bakken was the farm - there were 40 farms by that name in the 1865 census. If you know the first name of his father it would be easier.

No hit with the info you have given. How do you know that Grimstad is the place he was born, what other info do you have?

Erik -
Start by actually sharing the information you do have -- as completely as possible. That will simplify the process and keep useless postings to a minimum.
Writing a Good Query

When you share so little information it is sometimes best to start by searching in the census databases of the Norwegian Historical Data Centre (NHDC) -- they allow area wide searching and the website instructions for use are linked from nearly every page.
Norwegian Historical Data Centre (NHDC)

You've mentioned the following information - Gunder, father Ole, probable farm name Bakken, birth 1836 (+/-) and possible connection to an area near Grimstad, Aust-Agder.
Using the NHDC census and just assuming that the man you seek MIGHT still be in Norway for the 1865 census the following is easily found and might prove interesting -
Bakken farm in Landvik, Hommedal

So you will probably want to read the good advice for starting a search for Norwegian ancestors. Understanding these basics will save everyone a great deal of time and allow you the thrill of doing it yourself -
http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~norway/articles.html

You can familiarize yourself with the parishes and districts of Aust-Agder by using the following map -

I find this Gunder Olsen Bakken, perhaps a shot in the dark?

He married in Landvik in Hommedal March 7. 1862, age 26 to Johanne Thorsdatter Grinnevold, his father was Ole Olsen and her father was Thor Aanonsen, down page #8

It was him, he was born Feb. 20. 1836 in Landvik in Hommedal #8
His mother was Kirsten Christensdatter.

Bakken in Hommedal 1865, right persons Hopkins.
Gunder, Johanne and two daughters, Kristine and Sina.

Johanne´s parents on Grinnevold in 1865, Thor Aanonsen Grinnevold and Sigrid Torjusdatter, both 74 years old, Astri is Thors sister, his son Aanen age 45 married to Gurine Nilsdatter, 5 children.

Gunder had an older brother, Ole Christinan born in 1834, see #6
His brother Christen was born in 1832, see #10
Ole Olsen (29) and Kisten Christensdatter (28) married July 6 1830, see #5
Kisten Christensdatter is most likely the Christine Christensdatter born May2 Bapt May 8 1803, see left page
Father Christen Christensen (Christen Eyde witnes at the wedding) and mother Targeir Torbiørnsdatter.

Dear Kaarto.

I apologize for not giving you all the information I have. Hopkins, you are right. Here is what I know:

Gundar O. Bakken born Feb 20, 1836 Grimstad
He was a sailor
Married: March 17, 1862 to Johanna Thornsen b. Juli 2, 1834.
(Gunder Bakken of Johanna Thorson blev ogteviet den 7de Mars 1862)
so maybe it was March 7 and not March 17......

it looks like they had the followin children...
Christine Bakken er fodt den 5th Jan. 1863
Ole Theodre Bakken er fodt den 2nd Dec, 1867
?Thor? Olaus Bakken er fodt den....
..there are other children but the document I have is cut off there.

Hopkins

I think the link to the Bakkens in the 1865 is the correct family. Although there is no record of a Sina in the family in the documents that I have.

I do show another son born in Evansville, MN May; 24, 1876. His name is Terje Olsen Bakken.

You were right, pleace dont apologize for that.

They married on March 7. 1862, I have corrected the wrong date I gave you in my former posting, big sorry, I must have been sleeping or working on two records at the same time.

Sina Bakken was born Mai 21. 1865, born to Gunder Olsen and Johanne Thorsdatter(Thorson in USA), #32
Perhaps Sina died young, she was almost newborn in the 1865 census?

Ole Teodor Bakken born Dec. 3. 1867, born to Gunder Bakken and Johanne Thorsdatter, down page #50

Joanna Thorsdatter born July 2. 1834 as you pointed out, born to Thor Aanonsen and Siri Torjusdatter Grinnevold, right hand #9

This is the correct family, Landvik is close to Grimstad.

Hi Kaarto.

What does it say to the very far right ledger of Ole's birth. It looks like America?

For the record, here is the birth of Thor Olaus Bakken, November 7, 1870. (#43)

http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=820&idx_id=820&idx_listetype=dp&idx_kjonn=&uid=ny&idx_side=-43

p.s. how do change this long link to a simple number like you do?

You are a good observer, it´s written America, which means he emigrated to USA..

Use the Testing Forum and follow Borge and Lester´s directions.
Good luck
